of the fine arts in Yale College from 1869 to 1907,
when he retired ; M. A. and LL. B., and the author
of " Hand Book of Greek and Roman Sculpture."

ii. Maj. Gen. Amos Beebe Eaton, b. Catskill, N. Y., May
12, 1806; m. April 21, 1831, Elizabeth, dau. of
Calvin and Phebe (Ely) Sheldon, and widow of
Joseph Spencer. She was b. Lyme, Conn., April

18, 1796, and d. Washington, D. C, May 8, 1868.
He m. (2) Sept. 7, 1870, Mary, dau. of Isaac and
Clarinda Jerome, and widow of Col. E. Kerby
Smith, U. S. A. He d. New Haven, Conn., Feb.
21, 1877. Gen. Eaton graduated from West Point
in 1826 and served in the U. S. Army until his
death. He was brevetted Major General in 1865.
He was for ten years at the head of the subsistence
department of the army, and was noted for the
fidelity with which he performed every duty. Ch. :

Prof. Eaton graduated from Yale College, 1857 ;
S. B., M. A. and professor of botany in same from
1864 until his death. He was the author of " Ferns
of North America," and "Ferns of the Southwest."
Prof. Eaton was greatly interested in tracing his
Cady ancestry, and placed his valuable researches
in the hands of the compiler of this work several
years before his lamented death. They bore
evidence of sincere and discriminating labor. Ch. :

N. Y. Asa Cady m. (2) Mrs. Aclanta B. Hubbell, Jan. 17, 1827;
she d. June 12, 1873, Syracuse, N. Y.

He removed with his parents to Florida, N. Y., soon after 181 1 ;
he settled in Sullivan, Madison Co., N. Y., where he resided until his
death. In 1815 he purchased land at " Oak Hill." The following
is an extract from the Chittenango Herald of Aug. 20, 1854: "In
the recent death of Capt. Asa Cady there is not only a deep and
afflicted family bereavement, but society has lost a highly esteemed
and valuable member. Through life he has been a man of the
sternest integrity and most honorable bearing. He was for many
years extensively engaged on the public works of this and other
states, and was highly esteemed for his energy, ingenuity,

perseverance and punctual discharge of every duty. Possessing by
nature a mind of more than ordinary power, he has held a
commanding influence in all his business transactions."

Asa Cady was Captain and Chief of Staff in the Engineers in the
War of 1812. Anna Stanton, wife of Asa Cady, was the dau. of
Nathan and Anna Stanton ; Nathan was son of Lieut. Joseph and
Anna Wheeler Stanton of Stonington, Conn. ; Joseph was son of
Joseph and Margaret Cheseboro Stanton; Joseph was son of John
and Hannah (Thompson) Stanton. He was Captain of one of the
four Connecticut regiments in King Philips war. John was son of
Thomas and Ann (Lord) Stanton. This Thomas Stanton embarked
from London, Eng., Jan. 2, 1635, in the Bonaventura. Went first to
Virginia, then to Boston. In 1637 he settled in Hartford, Conn.
He d. Dec. 2, 1676.
