PREFACE.

We take pleasure in presenting to the public herewith our Third Volume
of the Fort Wayne City Directory, to which we have appended business
directories of Antwerp, Auburn, Bluffton, Columbia City, Decatur, Hunt-
ington and New Haven.

The utmost care has been taken, from the inception of the work to its
close, to obtain correct and reliable imformation and to arrange and classify
it in the most convenient form. Absolute freedom from error, in a work
of this kind, can never be attained and we only claim to have put forth our
best efforts to make a volume of which the citizens, and we as publishers,
should be proud.

A large amount of information concerning the public, religious, chari-
table and private institutions of the city will be found on pages 299 to 315.
The work contains 9,354 names, against 8,645 i'^ o"^' I'^st issue, an increase
of 709 names. From these figures we estimate the present population of
the city to be 31,739. This includes territory outside the limits and
adjacent to the city proper.

It was the intention of the publishers to give a statistical review of the
trade and manufactures of the city — historic in its character and embrac-
ing every legitimate industry, but owing to the illness of the Hon. F. P.
Randall, who had kindly offered to write up the same, we have been obliged
to complete the present issue without this desirable addition, and to post-
pone its publication till our next issue for 1878.

Thanking all who have aided us by their patrt)nage and assistance, and
trusting that future editions may merit a continuation of their favors,
we remain, Very respectfully,

R. L. POLK & CO.,

Publis/iers.
