BURMA

By MAX. AND BERTHA FERRARS

300 pages text, and 450 Illustrations from Photographs.

The life of the Burman is portrayed from the cradle to the grave. A series of 450
consecutive photographs illustrate the characteristic situations in the life of the leading
race, the aboriginal or hill races, the effects of scenery, the animals, and the vegetation.
The portrayal of no people has yet been carried out with this degree of fulness and of
beauty. Burma presents contrasts to India, China, and Japan, as great as these do to
one another. But just as Japan is becoming Europeanized and losing her outward
individuality, so is Burma also, and so is the Tyrol and every country whose charm lay
in a distinctive aspect. In less thiui a generation the indigenous character of Burma
will have passed. Even now the medley is such that only an observer trained to the
habits and ideas of old Burma can separate the pristine features. Only by help of such
an experience, and by studying each subject until a characteristic and artistic picture
resulted, has it been possible to record the features of Burma in their original type.
During the course of four years several thousands of special photographs were taken
for this purpose.

Sir MONTSTUART E. GRANT DUFF on the Series—

"The delegates of the University Press exercised a wise discretion in selecting Sir William Hunter
to be the editor of their ' Rulers of India ' Series. It may be said that he is far the greatest master
who ever lived of those Indian facts which the Indian administrator ought to have present to his mind.
He has, too, a remarkable literary faculty, a power of marshalling his facts in a manner to make
them attract and retain the attention of the reader."
