Was an active and influential member of the provincial Con-

member of the committee of correspondence and public safety in
the same. Also a member of the executive council of the state.

and of Gens. Matthias and Robert Ogden, distinguished officers
in the American army.

G£y. ISRAEL PUTNAM. Born, Salem, Mass., January 7,
1718; died in Brooklyn, Conn., May 19, 1790. He was a mem-
ber of the Sons of Liberty and a selectman. Upon receiving the
news of the battle of Lexington, he mounted his horse and rode
to Cambridge. From that time until the battle of Bunker Hill
he was (as brigadier-general) actively engaged. He was in
command at Bunker Hill. When Washington took command of
the army in July he was made major-general, and was near the
commander-in-chief during all the investment and siege of Bos-
ton. His service from that time is the familiar record of history
in full command of New York, the battle of Long Island, the
movements above the Hudson, building of West Point, etc. In
1779 he was struck by paralysis and compelled to leave the army.
He retired to Pomfret, Conn., where he lived quietly, strong in
life, but stricken in body until his death.

He was chairman on the committee of safety at Kingston, N. Y.

/OS/A If DUNNING. Was born in Newton, Conn., October 7,
1755, and died in Williamson, Wayne county, N. Y., December,
1841. In April, 1775, Josiah Dunning, while living in Pownal,
Vt., as a private, assisted in organizing a volunteer company
to capture Fort Ticonderoga. A portion of the company,
including Dunning, marched to Skensboro (now Whitehall),
joining forces with Col. Benedict Arnold, and sailed in a
schooner down the lake, arriving at Ticonderoga in the morning
after the surrender of the garrison. In 1776 Dunning served as
one of the guard to the public stores in Bennington county; July
ii 1777. was orderly sergeant of a company of militia in Pownal,
Vt. ; on the arrival of Gen. Burgoyne he was ordered to warn

out his company. They were employed in scouting parties after
the British and Tories. He was present at Saratoga prior to and
at the surrender of Gen. Burgoyne in October, after which he
was discharged at Bennington.

COL. JONATHAN ELKINS. Born at Hampton, N. H., Octo-
ber 23, 1761; moved to Peacham, 1776. Scout with Gen. Bai-
ley's regiment; taken prisoner March 8, 17S1, at his father's

house, b)' the British from Canada; taken to Quebec, thence to
Mill Prison, near Plymouth, England; arrived there February 9,
1782; exchanged for one of Cornwallis' troops, June 24, 1782, and
returned to his house at Peacham that summer. Eunice (Stod-
dard) Sprague, widow of Alden S. Sprague, was the daughter of
NATHAN STODDARD oi Woodbury, Conn., captain of light
infantry in 1777, who served in all the engagements near Danbury,
Horseneck and near New York. His troops were sent b}' Gen.
Washington to oppose the British on Lake Champlain; taken pris-
oner at the battle of Ticonderoga and sent to Quebec; was con-
cealed and fed by a French landlady in Canada for nearly a year,
who aided him to escape, which he did by swimming the St. Law-
rence and fleeing through the woods to Woodbur3^ He raised
another company and was stationed on the Delaware, opposite
Fort Mifflin, under Gen. Greene. In the attack made upon this
fort, November 15, 1777, Gen. Greene fell and the command fell
upon Stoddard, which he held but a few hours, when an eighteen
pound ball instantly killed him while leading his command.

DANIEL SULLIVAN. Organized a body of militia, of which

he was made captain, in Frenchman's Bay, Province of Maine.

He served from 1776 until 1780 and was captured by the British

officers of the ship Allegiance, February, 1781.

He went to Ticonderoga, and was at Valley Forge, afterwards
he went to West Point where he had a sergeant's command of
horse guards in that vicinity.

died, Bolton, Mass., February 9, 1835. He was a private of the
minute company under a command of Capt. Jacob Goold in Col.
Benjamin Lincoln's regiment. Private in Capt. Joseph Trufant's
independent company. Private in Capt. Thomas Nash's com-
pany. Col. Solomon's regiment who marched on the 4th of
March, 1776, to take possession of the heights of Dorchester.
