THE COVER

the flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and
white, iiith a union of thirteen stars of uhite on a hlne field, re
a new constellation."

rtrfsorttm rr

Thus, on June 14, 1777, the (Continental Congress ereated the first official American
fla^. Because th«' resolution did not specify an arrangement for the stars, there were
many variations in the flags that followed. Historians, however, are in general agreement
that the flag depicted on the cover of this directory represents the first national flag of
our Republic, and thus it symbolizes the observance of the nation's 200th birthday.

• • •

Tlie cover painting is the work of the noted American artist Stevan Dohanos, who is
represented in many leading galleries and collections. Dohanos is also widely known for
his illustrations in numerous publications portraying contemporary American life.

TELEPHONE TIPS TO SAVE YOU MONEY, TIME AND WORRY

DIAL IT YOURSELF

You can save money by dialing ail your calls direct

without involving an operator. We offer lower rates

on directly dialed calls to anywhere In the United
States, except Alaska.

SCHEDULE YOUR CALLS

If you call someone frequently, try to arrange a
specific time when he or she will be there to take
your call. That way you can always call station-to-
station and save money.

CALL STATION-TO-STATION

Whenever you are reasonably sure the person you
want to reach will be there, or if you'll talk with
anyone who answers, call station-to-station. Calling
person-to-person can cost more than twice as much
as a station-to-station call.

AVOID INVOLVING AN OPERATOR

most coin phones, requests for time and charges and
calls charged to another number all require the
services of an operator. This means we have to
charge more for these types of calls.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS

You'll find a place for listing emergency numbers
for Police, Fire, Ambulance and others on the inside
front cover of this directory. Fill them in for fast
reference. If, however, the number isn't handy in an
emergency, dial "0" (Operator) for assistance.

DON'T PAY FOR WRONG NUMBERS

If you reach a wrong number we don't want you to
pay for It. Let the operator know right away so that
you won't be charged for it. If you call from a coin
phone, we'll mail you a refund. One way to avoid
wrong numbers is to keep the area code and number
before you as you dial.

LET IT RING

When you make a call, give your party time to
answer - about 10 rings - before you hang up. This
could save you having to make a second call later.
