EXPLANATORY NOTE
The Foreign Service List , issued quarterly by the Department of State, is compiled
as a basic aid for personnel in the Department of State and the Foreign Service, for other
Government agencies, for other governments, and for groups outside of government having
need of this information.
Personnel listed include the following: all chiefs of mission; all Foreign Service
officers; all Foreign Service Reserve officers; all Foreign Service Staff officers of class
nine and above; all Technical Cooperation Administration officers of class nine and above;
certain Foreign Service Staff officers of classes ten, eleven, and twelve only when assigned
to posts with a complement of one, two, and/or three officers; and a special section fur-
nished by the Mutual Security Administration.
The January issue of the List includes the posts of assignment, the consular districts,
the tariff of Foreign Service fees, the index of persons, and the geographic index.
The April, July, and October issues include the posts of assignment and the two
indexes. One of these three issues each year, beginning with July 1, 1952, will include a
section showing the breakdown by class of certain groups in the Foreign Service.
Only those actions received in the Division of Publications prior to the fifteenth of the
month preceding the month in which this List is dated are included. This List is compiled
and edited by the General Editing Branch, Division of Publications. Please report to that
Branch any necessary corrections.
