- Up to 1879 {Calendar, i88o-8i) honours taken by Medical Graduates were differentiated
as those gained either at the examination for the Degree of M.B. (M.D. under Old Regulations)
or as gained in the special examination for CM. This distinction has never been made in
the " Honours List " which has appeared in each Calendar since 1881-82, and having been
discontinued, since 1880 inclusive, in the yearly lists of degrees conferred with honours, has
not here been observed. John Robert McLintock, who obtained the Degree of M.B. in i860 ,
is however shown as having gained Honourable Distinction when graduating CM. in the
following year.

■' The system of having two grades of honours (" Highest Honours " and " Honourable
Distinction ") was not approved by the Senatus until 24th July, 1862, and did not come into
general operation until the Graduation of April, 1863 ; but David Mackie on being admitted
to the Degrees of M.D. and CM., 25th April, 1862, was given the first place in order of merit
of those who at that date graduated with Honourable Distinction, and was granted a diploma
and certificates on which it was stated that he was '"entitled to the Highest Academical
Honours".

^ Did not graduate as CM. until 28th November, 1863.

ARRANGED ACCORDING TO THE DATES OF THEIR DEGREES.^

The Doctors of Divinity were all clergymen of various denominations, and in
this connection it is interesting to note that a graduate of the University of Aberdeen,
Professor William Mitchell Ramsay, M.A., 1871, received on the 12th April, 1906,
the unique distinction of being the first layman admitted to the roll of honorary
graduates in Divinity of the University of Edinburgh.

Of the 120 Doctors of Divinity there were : —
54 clergymen of the Church of Scotland.

28 „ of the Free Church or United Free Church of Scotland.

8 ,, of the Presbyterian Church of England.

7 „ of the Presbyterian Churches in the Colonies.

7 „ of the Congregational Church.

6 „ of the Church of England.

5 „ of the Episcopal Church in Scotland.

4 „ of the United Presbyterian Church,

and one clergyman of the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa.

Of the above, forty-nine were M.A. King's College (one being also B.D. Aberd.)
and one was alumnus but not a graduate.

Thirty-two were M.A. Marischal College (one being also B.D. Aberd.) and
three were alumni, but not graduates.

Twenty-four were M.A. Aberd. (of whom two were also M.D. and two B.D.)
and one was B.D., but not M.A. Aberd,

Ten were not alumni either of King's College, Marischal College or Aberdeen

1 If after the date of graduation any alteration occurred in the designation of an honorary

laur^ation, see the Roll,
