of Yorkshire origin, and probably bore the name of Keys or
Kees; the variant under which John Caius first appears in
College. B.A. 1532-3; 1st in the ordo, a significant fact;
M.A. 1535. Fellow, Dec 6, 1533-Sept. 29, 1545. Principal
of Physwick's Hostel, 1533. Went to Padua in 1539, where
he studied for four years, graduating M.D. May 13, 1541.
Lecturer on Aristotle at Padua. After further travel in
Italy he returned to England by Switzerland and Holland,
c. 1544. From 1545 he practised physic in London; but not
as sometimes stated, elsewhere. F.K.C.P. Dec 22, 1547.
President, 1555-60; 1562, 1563, 1571. Physician to Edward
VI, Mary, and Elizabeth. Lecturer in Anatomy in the
Barber-surgeons' hall. From 155 1 he resided in the Close of
St Bartholomew, Smithfield. In 1557 he formed the design
of enlarging and endowing Gonville Hall. The charter of
foundation is dated Sept. 4, 1557, i.e. 'Gonville and Caius
College.' He graduated M.D. of Cambridge, by incorporation
from Padua, Apr. 1, 1558. On the death of Thomas Bacon
he was elected Master of his College, Jan. 24, 1558-9. In
spite of his magnificent endowment his relations with the
fellows were very strained. He left Cambridge June, 1573;
and died in St Bartholomew's, July 29. Buried in the
chapel of Caius College. His monument there was designed
