BATEMAN, WILLIAM. Graduated at Cambridge in Civil and
Canon Law. B. in Norwich, c. 1298. S. of William, citizen
and bailiff, and M.P. for the city. Archdeacon of Norwich,
1328. For some years at the Papal Court of Avignon, where
he became auditor of the palace. Employed by the Pope to
mediate between the English and French monarchs. Bishop
of Norwich, 1344, where he distinguished himself by his
assertion of Ins episcopal rights in the visitation of the
monasteries, especially that of Bury, and by his courage
during the Black Death. To the end he was busy on foreign
missions. On the last of these he died at Avignon, Jan. 6,
1355- Buried in the Cathedral. Best known in Cambridge
as the founder of Trinity Hall, in 1350; and, as executor
of Edmund Gonville, by the actual establishment of Gonville
