NOTE.-Upper Halliford and Charlton (or Chertington) are hamlets in
this parish which altogether embraces a large area.
Vol. I. Baptisms and Burials, 1565 to 1783 ; Marriages, 1566 to 1754.
About 300 paper leaves originally, and only 260 now, but the entries
seem to be intact. Leather binding rather suggestive of the middle of
the eighteenth century when possibly some leaves were added. Very
good condition considering the long period dealt with and the vast
quantity of information contained, rather too much in fact for one
volume, although for reference purposes that has its advantages.
Measures 12 in. by 8 in. To some extent it is probably a transcript
although on paper. Contains a list of benefactions, briefs, vicars,
and notes on the parish and churchyard rails, also a reference to
the French colony here, their preacher being Rev. Chas. Le Blanc,
who died in 1735. Quite a number of the aristocracy lived and died
here, and this is a very interesting register.
Vol. II. Printed parchment forms for Banns and Marriages combined,
1754 to 1799, Bound in sheep skin. The proportion of signatures
by educated hands is above the average. Robert Coney. John Vesey
and Wm. Truss were parish clerks.
