Marriages at East Stoke,
1538 to 1812.
Note.— Portions of the town of Newark, such as the Castle, the Mills, the
" Tolnies," etc., are situate in this parish, and the Baptisms, Mar-
riages, and Burials, of their residents are recorded in the earlier
Registers of East Stoke.
The greatest peculiarity about the Parish Registers is that, like
those of the adjoining parish ot Thorpe, they are on paper.
Though the first part of Vol. I is evidently a transcript of an
earlier volume, it is made upon paper instead of parchment, as
ordered by the act of Queen Elizabeth, and throughout the 17th
century also the Registers of this parish were continued to be
kept in paper books. The earlier Registers of Stoke are as
follows : —
Vol. I. A paper book in parchment covers. It contains entries of
Baptisms from 1538 to 1672, Burials 1559 to 1675, and Marriages
from 1559 to 1685. " The plague" visited the parish in 1646 with
extraordinary virulence, upwards of 160 of the Burials in that
year being marked with a cross to indicate that those persons
were victims of the pestilence ; a note in the volume sayings
"there dyed in the towne of Stoke, 1646, eightscore and one,
whereof of the plague seven score and nineteene." This was the
year in which Newark surrendered to the Scotch Army, and the
plague was rampant in the town (see Brown's Annals of Newark,
pp. 164-8) and appears to have made great work in the surround-
ing villages (see note to " Balder-ton!'). On page 1 1 of this book
occurs the interesting entry which is given in facsimile as a
frontispiece to this volume. The bottom portion of all the leaves
throughout the first half of this book have been much eaten by
mice and otherwise damaged, causing the loss of a great number
of entries.
Vol. II is a paper book in parchment covers, the leaves measuring
15 by 5f inches. It contams entries of Baptisms and Burials from
1679 to 1798, and of Marriages from 1686 to 17153.
Vol. Ill consists of Marriages trom 1755 to 1805.
Vol. IV contains Marriages Irom 1806 to 1812.
Vol. V is headed, " A copy of the Register Book taken in the year
1814 by William Attenburrow, Surveyor." It contains a copy of
62 Nottinghamshire Parish Registers. [1539
the Baptisms and Burials in Vol. II, i.e., from 1679 to 1798, and
also has the original entries of those ceremonies from 1798 to
1812.
These Marriages have been transcribed by Mr. T. M. Blagg, and
are now printed under his supervision by permission of the Rev.
A. W. Bailey, vicar of the parish.
