PREFACE.

A long interval, which the Editor greatly regrets, has
elapsed since the first volume of Worcestershire Parish
Registers was printed in this series, a delay caused by a
variety of reasons, an important one being the absence of
sufficient local help in the transcriptions of the Registers,
But it may be hoped that the appearance of the present
volume will stimulate a renewed interest in the subject
in Worcestershire, and that it will be possible for the
future to issue at least one volume annually. It may be
mentioned that in some counties as many as two volumes
of Registers have been issued in each year.

In the previous volume twelve Registers were in-
cluded, of which six dated from the sixteenth century ;
the present one contains seventeen Registers, and of these
nine commence at the same early period ; three of them
being dated 1539, the year after Parish Registers were
directed to be kept by the order of Thomas, Lord
Cromwell. Four belong to the seventeenth century, and
one does not begin till the late date of 1713.

It may be convenient to repeat here the names
of the parishes which were included in the first volume.
They are: 1379280

Shipston-on-Stour, 157 1. Alstone, 1550.

Tidmington, 1693. Kingston, 1588.

Bradley, 1630. Redditch, 1808.

Kempsey, 1690. Church Lench, 1702.

Alderminster, 1641. Rous Lench, 1539.

Offenham, 1543. Elmbridge, 1570.

This volume, like its predecessor, is issued without

an index. The Editor hopes that it will be feasible

hereafter to issue a general index for the whole county,

and thus avoid that great evil — an undue multiplicity of

indexes. Moreover, by postponing index-making, we

expedite the printing of the Registers themselves, a
matter of no small moment when we remember the
serious risks of fire, theft and forgery, not to mention
those of natural decay and accidental loss, to which these
valuable records are continually exposed.

The following abbreviations are again made use of :

w.=widower or widow. p.=of the parish of.

s.=spinster, single woman. co.=in the county of.

b.=bachelor, or single man. dioc.=in the diocese of.

d.=:daughter of. £zVr.=marriage licence.

The Editor desires to express his thanks to his old
friend, the Rev. Frank Taylor, who has since passed
away, and to the Rev. A. D. Wilkinson, the Rev. A. C.
Style, the Rev. F. S. Lowndes, the Rev. W. Davies, the
Rev. J. H. Bourlay, the Rev. E. E. Lea, Mr. J. W. Rusling,
and Mr. W. Bradbrook, for their valued help in under-
taking the needful work of transcribing these ancient
Registers for the present volume. Thanks for permission
to print the Registers are due to the clergy, whose names
are mentioned under the respective parishes.

It may be well to remind the reader that \these
printed abstracts of the Registers are not legal
" evidence." For certificates application must be made
to the local clergy.

It only remains to add that the Editor will gladly
welcome further help in the way of transcribing the
Marriage entries for the ensuing Volume III. Such
voluntary help alone renders it possible to issue this
series of the Parish Registers of Worcestershire.

Marriages at
North & Middle Littleton,

1662 to 1812.

Note. — The earliest existing Registers belonging to North and Middle
Littleton commence with entries under the date 1601, aud includes the
weddings in the year 1740, but some extracts from an earlier register
book now lost, are preserved in the British Museum. These extracts
state : —

"The Register of the Parish of Middle Littleton and North Littleton
beginneth 18th July, 1595."

The second volume contains the Marriages for the period of 1740 to 1752,
while the third volume of the usual printed forms gives the Marriages
from 1755 to 18 1 2. The extracts have been made by the late Rev.
Frank Taylor, Vicar of Littleton, and they are now printed by leave
of the Rev. F. G. E. Ashworth, the present Vicar.
