Much of the material contameii in this pamphlet was col-
lected incidentally while investigating the antecedents, histoiy
and descendants of ''Old John Ogden," of Ehzabethtown. to
whom the ancestors of John C^g-den, of Fairfield was probably
a brother. The records of Fairfield, Comi., were most care-
fully and thoroughly examined by Mr. Lawrence VanAlstyne
and every available local authority- consulted with the result
given herein. Extensive correspondence with various mem-
bers of the family has been had. and many records have been
examined and compared to complete the genealogy. It is
not supposed, however, that that result has been attained, but
it is believed that this publication ^^^ll lead to further correc-
tions and supplementaiy records, the filling in of dates, &c..
which will be available for a larger and more extensive work
hereafter. All information, whether in correction or addition
to what is herein contained, may be sent to Wm. Ogden
Wheeler or to Edmund D. Halsev,

JOHN OGDEN.

? John Ogden of Fairfield, X. J., was the son of Richard

Ogden, senior, of Fairfield, Conn., whose estate was inventor-
ied April 18, 1087. On the 15th of June of that year distri-
bution was made of his estate, and his ^vidow, ]Mary (Jgden,
»* was appointed administratrix and guardian of the youngest son
1 John. It appears from this order of distribution and other
records that the children of Richard were
Richard, ''pretenihng to be the eldest son yet is not the first
born son," who married lOtlt, Sarah, daughter of Thom-
as Staple.
David, who married Abigail Sherwood.
, John, afterwards of Xew Jersey.

Hannah, wife of Sergeant Samuel Ward.
Thankful, wife of Daniel SiUiman.
.] Elizabeth, wife of Daniel Meeker.

/j' Mrs. John Pine, thus mentioned in the record, "and where-
I ! as John Pine had in marriage ^Wth a daughter of ye de-

i 1 ceased, a child."

I I Oct. 27, 1600, John Ogden, his mother being dead, chose

\ I as his guardian his brother-in-law. Sergeant Ward, who died
\ ( before Jan. 16, 1G92, but no new g-uardian was then appoint-
;i j ed. May 5, 1604-, John Ogden's name appears as a witness to
■] i a release. March 1-1, 1G'.».5, he sells land to John Sturges, and
Dec. 11, 169G, he buys land of his cousin, EdmanWard, adm'r.
il Oct. 2, 1700, John Ogden "of ffairfield in Xew West Jarsey,"
sells land in Fairfield, Conn., which was part of his share of
his father, Richard Ogden's estate, to Samuel Cobbett, and
again July 5, 1705, being "of Xew Fairfield in Cohansey,"
he sells his share of the commons which came from his fath-
er's estate to Jonathan Sturges. It appears he married 1st

Mary Dimon but afterwards Sarah , the latter being

named in his \\'iU, which is dated Dec- 21, 1745, and was
prove<l ^larch 20, 17-4'J. (Secy. State Of. Trenton, Book 5, pg.
