J. de Lythegreyns." A letter from the archbishop to Sir John
de Lythegreyns, informing him that on this Thursday before
the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist (June 20)
letters of confirmation from the pope had been presented to
the king in Parliament, who had received them with a joyful
countenance, and that on the morrow he was to do fealty
for the temporalities. He requested Lythegreyns to take
possession of the temporalities on his behalf. {Letters from

bishop elect to B, [de Goth], cardinal bishop of Albano,
granting him a pension of one hundred marks a year for
promoting his election as archbishop, and begging him to
persuade the pope to allow him to be consecrated in England
and have the pallium sent thither. His best manor,i which
was worth more than half the temporalities of the arch-
bishopric, had been reduced to ashes by the Scotch and the
tenants scattered, so that for two years he would receive

Albertinus, who alone of our men was able to speak with
the pope in person, had been followed, our business would
have been completed. If you have not finished before he
comes, avail yourself of his assistance. The Dublin affair^
is arranged. Get on with our business and don't ask advice
as you are in the very place where it can be best obtained.
Business has always been done through merchants at the
time of elections to this see, so ask the pope to order some
company of merchants in England to receive the money we
have borrowed from friends for his use. Lately we received
on Monday before the feast of the Decollation of St. John
the Baptist (Aug. 26) your letters by Francis, but they give
no reason why he should be sent. The matter has com-
menced in the papal Camera and must be terminated there.
