1888, Troy, N. Y. Mr. Green was a manufacturer of fine furni-
ture. He came to this country when a child with his parents who
settled at Troy, N. Y. In 1845 he established himself in the furni-

stroyed by fire he rallied each time and being a man of positive
character he finally attained marked success in the business. In
politics he was a free-soiler and an earnest Republican before the
organization of that party; he was zealous in religion, and for

Nichols, from whom he got a divorce in 1880; he d. intestate Oct.
9, 1882, Deer Lodge, Mont. His name appears in the Boston
Directory, 1839-40; he was chief clerk in the postoffice at Boston
while his uncle, Nathaniel Green, was postmaster, and it was at
this time that he m. Miss Bowditch, whose father kept a hotel at
Chelsea, about where the Naval Hospital now is. He was Lieu-
tenant in the New England Guards. He went to Montana in 1866,
and as he was an able attorney, he was chosen to many judicial
positions in western cities, Portland, Lewiston, Florence, Walla-

Walla and Elk City. He purchased a ranch in Montana on a por-
tion of which the business district of the city of Missoula is now
built. As he died without making a will, this property, valued at
t $17,000, reverted to the state and all efiforts to recover any part of

f it for his son, William Batchelder Pomeroy, have failed. It was

i understood that the father had died in the Sandwich Islands in

I 1852, until attorneys began the search for heirs. One might as-

sume with propriety that if there had been a Pomeroy Family
History in existence at the time this property escheated to the
state a different sequel might be presented. Hon. Thomas M.
Pomeroy was the Most Worshipful Grand Master of the Grand
Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of the jurisdiction of Mon-
tana at the time of his death. In his address at the end of his
term of office he apparently possessed an intimation of his ap-
proaching death, and added: "Something within seem.s to admonish
me that my work is ended; that I shall never meet you again in
Grand Lodge assembled. So feeling, I now invoke upon this
Grand Lodge and every brother here assembled, the choicest and
richest of heaven's blessings."

"After having installed the new officers elect, Past-Grand Mas-
ter Thomas M. Pomeroy was taken violently ill with an attack of
pneumonia, (on the evening of the same day) and after four days'
sickness, died, so swiftly realizing his own presentiment and pre-
diction that he should never meet his brethren again in an earthly
lodge." — Grand Lodge Proceedings.
