For the fourth time the welcome task is before us, of presenting to our pat-
rons the Boston Directory.

The last year we have found marked with numerous changes. Familiar faces
have disappeared, and new ones taken their places. These movements are regis-
tered in the following pages, and we shall continue to keep an eye upon the
shifting scenes, and annually record the changes. Grateful for the pubUc favor
and interest so liberally extended to us, we feel called upon, and disposed, to use
every effort to make improvements and give satisfaction.

We have in preparation an improved Map of Boston, designed particularly for
the Boston Directory, but we were unable to get it ready in season for this
number ; it is not necessary, perhaps, as last year a map was given.
Next year we promise a large and greatly improved one, giving East and
South Boston, with the streets on the neck, railroad lines from Boston, &c.,
&c. To make up for a map this year we have added eight more pages to the
miscellaneous matter, and over four thousand names.

STREET DIRECTORY

STREET DIRECTORY.

This year we commence a Street Directory of "Washinijtt-n, Hanover, Tremont, and Milk streets, with
Harrison avenue; an extended one beyond these woulH be of little or no utility, the streets of
Boston being so short and numerous. The lis<^ of streets this year will be found full and complete,
having been carefully corrected — see pt-^'e 8. A street directory of the city of New York may be of
some use, as there the streets extend two or three miles, and are more regularly laid out than here.
The following statement will show this fact : —

Number of streets, courts, places, &c. in Bost-ju 809

Number of streets, coiuts, places, &c. in New York 372

Yet the territory and population of New York is about four times as large as Boston.
Street Directory is found convenient, we shall extend it to other streets next year.

%* To find in what part of a street any number may be — say, for instance, 161 Washington — you will see in the table
below that Harvard place opens at l.W on the lefc, and Province House court at 163, of course 161 would be between
these two. The Hotels, Churches, &c., on the streets below, are also pointed out.
