Calling Another Party
on Your Line

If you are a party line subscriber and wish tp
dial another party on your line, it will be neces-
sary to dial a special code number, instead of the
regular telephone number listed in the directory.

If you dial the Directory number of other parties
who are on your line, you will get a busy signal.
Therefore, if you keep getting a busy signal when
calling a nearby telephone, it may Indicate that
they are on your line. You should then consult
the card which the Telephone Company will furnish
you in order to determine the special code number
of the party you wish to call.

After you have finished dialing the code number,
hang up your receiver. Your bell, as v/ell as the
bell of the party you are calling, will both ring at
intervals. When the dialed party answers, your
bell will stop ringing. You should then again lift
the receiver and talk to the party you hove colled.

If the called party does not answer within 2 to
4 minutes, the ringing will automatically stop.

ADDITIONAL ASSISTANCE IN DIALING

If the above instructions are not clear, notify
the Telephone Company and we will send some-
one to help you learn to dial.

HOW TO MAKE A LONG DISTANCE CALL

1 Dial "Operator" and give her the area code (or
city) and telephone number you are calling.

If you do not know the number, tell fhe Operator
the name and address of the person you are
calling. Tell her also whether it is a station or
person call.

FOR FASTER SERVICE ON LONG DISTANCE CALLS. USE AREA CODES

The United States end Conoda are divided into more than TOO telephone areas, each identified by a three-digit
area code. Use area codes to call from one telephone area to another, when the number you are calling has
two letters and five numerals or seven numerals. It is not necessary to use area codes when calling another
telephone within the same telephone area.

GENERAL INFORMATION

1. YOUR TELEPHONE SERVICE

Our aim is to render telephone servdce that
is satisfactory to our customers. However,
difficulties will at times occur despite all our
efforts to avoid them. Please report all diffi-
culties promptly and w^e will try to clear the
trouble as quickly as possible.

2. BUSINESS OFFICE LOCATION
AND HOURS

The business office is located on Caldwell St.,
Camden, Alabama. The business office will be
open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
from 8 to 12 a.m. and from 1 to 5 p.m., and on
Thursday and Saturday, 8 to 12 a.m.

The main office of the company is in Atmore,
Alabama, P.O. Box No. 29.

3. APPLICATIONS FOR SERVICE, FOR
MOVES AND DISCONTINUANCES

Camden:

When applying for service, please visit the
business office.

When you want your phone moved, changed
or discontinued, simply call the office and tell
them what you want.

When discontinuing your service, you must
NOTIFY THE TELEPHONE COMPANY.
Otherwise, you will still be responsible for pay-
ing the charges accruing against that telephone.

Thomaston:

When applying for telephone service, or to
have your phone moved or discontinued, write
to Box 29, Atmore, Alabama.

4. PAYMENT OF BILLS

Telephone bills are rendered on the 10th of
each month. Charges for local exchange serv-
ice are for one month. For example, on bill
rendered on January 10, the rental is for the
month of January. Long distance "toll"
charges are itemized on a separate statement.
All charges are payable on demand or upon
receipt of the bill.

Bills should be paid not later than the 20th
of each month. Your credit rating, as deter-
mined by the telephone company and reported
to others, depends upon the promptness with
which you pay your bills. Keep your credit
good by paying your bills promptly.
Camden, Ala.

When you do not pay promptly, your service
is subject to discontinuance. When service is
discontinued, there is a $1.50 charge for recon-
nection. If the instrument has been removed,
the charge for reinstallation is more.

5. WHERE TO PAY BILLS

Camden:

Pay bills at the Telephone Office during office
hours.

Thomaston:

Pay bills at the Planters Bank and Trust
Company during banking hours. If you have
any question concerning your bill, write a note
about it to Box 29, Atmore, Alabama.

6. TELEPHONE CONVERSATION
RECORDING DEVICES

A short "beep" tone heard every 10 to 15
seconds indicates that your conversation is
being recorded by an electrical recorder con-
nected to the line. If you do not want your
conversation recorded, tell the person to whom
you are talking to disconnect his recording ma-
chine, and when he disconnects the recorder,
the "beep" tone will stop.

The use of a recorder without the "beep"
tone attachment is unlawful.

7. PROVIDE FOR CONCEALED
TELEPHONE WIRES

When you are building or remodeling, be
sure that your architect or contractor makes
provision for concealed telephone wires. Get
in touch with the telephone company before
you start to build so that we can advise you as
to the best and cheapest manner to make such
provision.

8. BUSINESS AND RESIDENCE RATES

Service subject to the business rate may be
determined by the location of the telephone
instrument or, the primary use made of the
service. The business rate will apply v.-hen the
telephone is located on premises primarily and
essentially used for business purposes, such as
offices, stores, shops, factories, and garages.
The business rate may also apply to telephones
located in domestic establishments when the
service is used substantially for, or advertised
for business purposes. Telephones located in
residences and used primarily for domestic
purposes are entitled to the rate for residence

service. If, however, such service is used
substantially for, or advertised for, business
purposes, the business rate will be applied.

9. ERRORS IN DIRECTORY LISTINGS

The Telephone Company assumes no liabil-
ity, whatever, for damages arising from errors
or omissions in the making up, or printing, of
this book. The utmost care is used, however,
in listing all subscribers correctly.

No binder, holder, or other cover, except
those furnished or approved by the Telephone
Company, shall be used in connection with any
telephone directory.

10. USE OF SERVICE AND FACILITIES

All facilities shall be furnished by and owned
by the telephone company, and the company
shall have the right to enter the subscriber's
premises for the purpose of inspection, repair-
ing, or removing such facilities, except that
switched lines and telephones are owned and
maintained by the subscriber.

The connection of unauthorized attachments
to, or tampering with the line or telephone by
the subscriber, will subject the service of that
subscriber to immediate disconnection or re-
moval.

Telephone Service is only for the use of the
subscriber, his family, and. in the case of a
business telephone, his employees and business
associates. Normal use of the telephone by
house guests, occasional business visitors and
like persons is considered to be proper, but
abnormal use. such as one telephone by two
or more families, the customers of a business
house, the patrons of a hotel, and like instances,
is not considered to be within the rates charged,
and such abnormal use will entitle the com-
pany to disconnect, or remove the telephone,
or to demand the installation of the proper type
of service to meet the situation, such as pay
stations, additional listings, joint users, chang-
ing the location of the telephone, etc.

The subscriber shall be responsible for rea-
sonable care of the telephone and other facil-
ities attached to his premises. He shall be
responsible for all charges accruing to his tele-
phone, regardless, specifically in the case of
long distance, of whether he personally placed
the call or accepted the charges. Such sub-
scriber responsibility shall continue until the
service is terminated in accordance with
"Termination of Service" below.

Party line customers shall be entitled to rea-
sonable use of the line. If the number of dura-
tion of conversations by any one party is of
such magnitude that the reasonable use of the
line by others is interfered with, the company
reserves the right to discontinue the service,
or where possible, to demand that the sub-
scriber take a higher grade of service.

The subscriber has no property or other
rights in the telephone number, and the com-
pany reserves the right to change the number
whenever it is desirable to do so.

When the use by any customer of his service
is such that there is unreasonable interference
with other parties on his line, with the opera-
tors, or with other telephone subscribers, the
company reserves the right to discontinue the
service. Such unreasonable interference
would include refusal to abide by the rules and
regulations set forth; the allowing of babies
and small children to play with the telephone,
the placing of calls impossible of completion,
habitual use by intoxicated persons, the use of
the telephone or line for purposes other than
regular telephone communications, and similar
other examples.

Profane or indecent language by a subscriber
will be considered unreasonable interference,
and should the offense be grave or habitual
enough to interfere with the operators, or other
telephone users, the company reserves the
right to discontinue the ser\'ice.

Termination of service shall be in accordance
with the above rules and regulations, by the
Telephone Company for cause, or on order of
the subscriber. In addition, service may be
terminated at the option of the Telephone Com-
pany in case of non-payment of bills. The
subscriber shall be responsible for all charges
accruing to his telephone until service is dis-
continued in accordance with this paragraph.

n. CAMDEN-AUTOMATIC TIMING
OF RURAL PARTY LINES

In Camden only, calls originated by cus-
tomers who have rural party line service will
be automatically timed. 6 to 8 minutes after
you begin your conversation you will hear a
short buzz on the line; 15 to 30 seconds later
your conversation will automatically be dis-
connected. The automatic timing feature on
rural party lines helps everyone on the line to
get better service, and is very popular with the
big majority of telephone subscribers. It works
only on local calls; it does not work on long
distance calls.
