TELEPHONE TIPS-MONEYSAVING AND MORE

NATION-WIDE AREA CODES

Bad Connection.

If you get a poor connection or are cut off on a Long Distance
call, both parties should hang up. Whoever placed the call
should dial the operator and describe the bad connection.
The operator will re-establish the call and adjust the charge
so you aren't billed for the interrupted time.

Call during bargain times and save from 35% to 60%.

Rates on interstate One-Plus calls you dial direct are lower
during evening, night, and weekend hours. You can save from
35% to 60% by dialing during these low rate periods. Refer to
the rate charts for out of state calls on a preceding page of
this Call Guide section.

Coin phone refunds.

If one of our coin phones collects your money and doesn't
complete your call, jot down the number and report it to us.
Just dial "0" (operator) from another phone and we will mail
your refund and repair the phone that's out of order.

Dial it yourself and save.

You can save money by dialing your calls direct without in-
volving an operator. We offer lower rates on One-Plus calls
you dial direct to anywhere in the continental United States.
Just dial 1 Plus the Area Code if different from your own Plus
the Distant Number. If the operator asks for your number,
give the one from which you are calling.

Don't pay for wrong numbers.

If you reach a wrong number when dialing long distance, we
don't want you to pay for the call. Let the operator know right
away so you won't be charged for it. If you call from a coin
phone, we'll mail you a refund.

Emergency numbers.

You'll find a place for listing emergency numbers for Police,
Fire. Ambulance, and others on the inside front cover of this
phone book. If you can't find the number in an emergency,
dial "0" (operator) for assistance.

Handicapped?

If you have a problem using the telephone or know of some-
one who does, call your local Telephone Business Office and
ask about our special services and equipment for the han-
dicapped. We offer a variety of special services for those with
hearing, sight, speech or motion impairments.

If you use the operator, long distance calls cost more.

Collect, credit card, hotel-guest, and com phone calls require
the services of an operator. So do requests for time and
charges and calls charged to another number. These
"operator assisted" calls cost more than One-Plus calls you
dial direct from a regular home or business telephone.

Let it ring.

When you make a call, local or long distance, give your party
time to answer-at least 10 rings-before you hang up. This
could save you having to make a second call later.

Like to talk?

A couple of optional long distance calling plans might save you
money. Call the telephone business office to find out about
Measured Circle and Home area Code Calling.

Look in the book.

To save money on directory assistance charges, look in the
book for numbers you need and call directory assistance only
when you must.

Moving day special.

If you have residence service and are planning a move, you
may save money by having your main phone and all exten-
sions put in at the same time. This saves our installer an extra
trip and saves you a charge for an extra installer visit.

Person-to-person calls cost the most.

A person-to-person call is the most expensive kind of long
distance call. Call person-to-person only when you wish to
speak to a particular person or extension phone.

Plan your conversation.

Whether it's business or personal, jot down the things you
want to talk about, the questions you want to ask. You'll save
calling time and you won't forget something you wanted to
say.

Schedule your calls.

If you call someone frequently, try to arrange a special time
when he or she will be there to take your call. That way you
can dial direct the One-Plus way and save!

Take advantage of holiday rates.

Our 35% discount evening rates apply on interstate One-Plus
calls you dial direct on these legal holidays. New Year's Day,
Independence Day. Labor Day. Thanksgiving, and Christmas
Day-and that's all day. not just evenings. If you're calling
nights or weekends, you get the 60% discount on interstate
One-Plus calls. Reduced rates also apply on interstate calls on
certain holidays.

Take your phone book with you when you move.

It'll save you lots of time when you want to call back to friends
or business associates you left behind-you'll already have
their numbers and won't have to waste valuable time calling
for Long Distance Directory Assistance.

Teach the children to dial "0" in emergencies.

Show your children how to use the phone in an emergency by
teaching them how to dial "0" for the operator. Also, make
sure they know their home phone number and encourage
them to always call home if they're going to be late. Give them
change to carry for emergency calls.

Use area codes.

Be sure to use the correct area code when dialing outside
your own area code. You will avoid reaching a wrong number.
Area codes for many cities are listed on preceding pages in
this Call Guide Section.

Vacation rates.

If you are going away for one month or more, you may save
money by temporarily suspending your home or business
telephone service. The suspended service rate is lower than
most regular rates.

On direct-dialed calls, you pay only for the minutes you
talk. The initial rate period is one minute anytime day or

Calling Card and
Operator-assisted one-minute rates

Operator-assisted calls are those requiring the
assistance of an Operator to complete the call. These in-
clude person-to-person, collect, billed-to-a-third-nunrjber,
hotel guest, and time-and-charge calls, and calls made
from a Public telephone.

The initial period for all Calling Card and Operator-

Dialing direct costs less

By dialing your own long distance
calls, you will pay the lowest rate
and pay for only the minutes you
talk (one-minute minimum).

To place a direct-dialed call:

within the 205 area, dial

1 + the telephone
number

outside the 205 area, dial

1 + the area code
+ the telephone
number

"800" Service telephone
numbers

Long distance calls can be made
without charge when calling those
businesses and people who have
"800" numbers.

To call an "800" number, dial
1 (or long distance service
access code) + 800 + the

telephone number

If you have trouble dialing direct,
call the Operator and explain the
difficulty. The call will be placed for
you. and you will be charged at the
direct-dial rate.

Dialing instructions for calls within
Local Access & Transport Areas (LATAs)

Calling Card calls

If you have a Calling Card (credit
card), you can place long distance
calls economically and have them
charged to your regular monthly
bill. To obtain a Calling Card, call
your Service Representative. There
are two ways to place Calling Card
calls.

1. To place a Calling Card call
from any telephone:

within the 205 area, dial

+ the telephone
number

outside the 205 area, dial

+ the area code
+ the telephone
number

When the Operator comes on the
line say you're placing a Calling
Card call and give your card
number.

2. To place a Calling Card call
from Touch-Tone telephones
only:

within the 205 area, dial

+ the telephone
number

(wait for tone)

+ the Calling
Card number

outside the 205 area, dial

+ the area code
+ the telephone
number

(wait for tone)

+ the Calling Card
number

If dialing from a Public telephone,
the special tone will be followed by
a recorded announcement asking
you to dial your Calling Card
number.

Exception: you can save time if the
number you're calling is the same
number as is on your Calling Card.
Dial "0" + the area code (if need-
ed) + the telephone number (wait
for tone) + the last 4 digits of the
card number and your call will go
through.

Sequence calling saves time

Where the new service is available,
sequence calling is an added con-
venience you can use to place more
than one Calling Card call without
entering the full card number each
time.

To place a sequence call from a
Touch-Tone telephone:

Don't hang up.

Dial

+ the new number

Billing on the first call stops when
you begin your sequence call. You
don't have to redial your Calling
Card number to have the new call
automatically charged to the billing
number.

Dialing instructions for calls
to other LATAs and area codes

Long distance service
access codes

Long distance calls that cross LATA
boundaries are handled by com-
panies other than National
Telephone. For billing purposes,
the network equipment recognizes
the access code of the long distance
company you're using, based on the
digits you dial at the beginning of
each call.

Area codes, prefix codes, and local
numbers are the same for all com-
panies providing long distance call-
ing service.

Dialing direct

Long distance rates are lowest
when you dial the call yourself and
speak with anyone who answers.

To place a direct-dialed call:

within the 205 area, dial 1 or long
distance service access code

+ the telephone
number

outside the 205 area, dial 1 or long
distance service access code

+ the area code
+ the telephone
number

"800" Service telephone
numbers

Long distance calls can be made
without charge when calling those
businesses and people who have
"800" numbers.

To call an "800" number, dial

1 (or long distance service
access code)

+ 800 + the
telephone
number

Calling Card calls

1. To place a Calling Card call from
any telephone:

within the 205 area, dial:

+ the telephone
number

outside the 205 area, dial

+ the area code
+ the telephone
number

When the Operator comes on the
line say you're placing a Calling
Card call and give your card
number.

2. To place a Calling Card call from
Touch-Tone telephones only:

within the 205 area, dial

+ the telephone
number

(wait for tone)

+ the Calling
Card number

outside the 205 area, dial

+ the area code

number

(wait for tone)

Card number

Exception: you can save time if the
number you're calling is the same
number as is on your Calling Card.
Dial "0" + the area code (if
needed) + the telephone number
(wait for tone) + the last 4 digits of
the card number and your call will
go through.

Operator-assisted calls

To place collect, billed-to-a-third-
number, time-and-charges, and
person-to-person calls:

within the 205 area, dial

+ the telephone
number

outside the 205 area, dial
