CALL- II
GUIDE II

TELEPHONE TIPS-MONEYSAYING AND MORE

Dial it yourself and save.

You can save money by dialing your calls direct without involving
an operator. We offer lower rates on One-Plus calls you dial
direct to anywhere in the continental United States except
Alaska. Just dial 1 plus the area code if different from your own
plus the distant number. If the operator asks for your number,
give the one from which you are calling.

Call during bargain times and save from 35% to 60%.

Rates on interstate One-Plus calls you dial direct are lower
during evening, night, and weekend hours. You can save from
35% to 60% by dialing during these low rate periods.
Refer to the rate charts for out-of-state calls on a preceding
page in this Call Guide Section.

If you use the operator, long distance calls cost more.

Collect, credit card, hotel-guest, and coin phone calls require
the services of an operator. So do requests for time and charges
and calls charged to another number. These "operator-assisted
calls cost more than One-Plus calls you dial direct from a
regular home or business telephone.

Person-to-person calls cost the most.

A person-to-person call is the most expensive kind of long
distance call. Call person-to-person only when you wish to
speak to a particular person or extension phone.

Take advantage of holiday rates.

Our 35% discount evening rates apply on interstate One-PIus
calls you dial direct on these legal holidays: New Year s Day,
Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas
Day—and that's all day, not just evenings. If you re calling
nights or weekends, you get the 60% discount on 'nterstate
One-Plus calls. Reduced rates also apply on intrastate calls on
certain holidays. Refer to the rate charts on preceding pages
In this Call Guide Section.

Schedule your calls.

If you call someone frequently, try to arrange a special time
when he or she will be there to take your call. That way you
can dial direct the One-Plus way and save!-

Plan your conversation.

Whether it's business or personal, jot down the things you want
to talk about, the questions you want to ask You II save
calling time— and you won't forget something you wanted to say.

Don't pay for wrong numbers.

If you reach a wrong number when dialing long distance,
we don't want you to pay for the call. Let the operator know
nlht away so that you won't be charged for it. If you call from
a coin phone, we'll mail you a refund.

Let it ring.

When you make a call, local or long distance, give your party
time to answer— at least 10 rings— before you hang up. This
could save you having to make a second call later.

Bad connection.

If you get a poor connection or are cut off on a Long Distance
call both parties should hang up. Whoever placed the call should
dial'the operator and describe the bad connection. The operator
will reestablish the call and adjust the charge so you aren t
billed for the interrupted time.

Use area codes.

Be sure to use the correct area code when dialing outside your
own area code. You will avoid reaching a wrong number.
Area codes for many cities are listed on preceding pages
in this Call Guide Section.

Vacation rates.

If you are going away for one month or more, you may save
money by temporarily suspending your home or business
telephone service. The suspended service rate is lower than
most regular rates.

Moving day special.

If you have residence service and are planning a move, you may
save money by having your main phone and all extensions
put in at the same time. This saves our installer an extra
trip and saves you a charge for an extra installer visit.

Take your phone book with you when you move.

it'll save you lots of time when you want to call back to friends
or business associates you left behind— you'll already have
their numbers and won't have to waste valuable time calling
for Long Distance Directory Assistance.

Emergency numbers.

You'll find a place for listing emergency numbers for Police,
F°re Ambulance, and others on the inside front cover of this
phone book. If you can't find the number in an emergency,
dial "0" (operator) for assistance.

Teach the children to dial "0" in emergencies.

Show your children how to use the phone in an emergency
by teaching them how to dial "0" for the ope''2*°r- ^^f '
make sure they know their home phone number and encourage
them to always call home if they're going to be late. Give them
change to carry for emergency calls.

Coin phone refunds.

If one of our coin phones collects your money and doesn t
comolete vour call, jot down the number and report it to us.
5SS dial "o" (operator) from another phone and we will mail you
your refund and repair the phone that's out of order.

CALL-
GUIDE

geneml infarmiEtian

your telephone number
is important

When your telephone number is pre-
ceded by your area code, it is the only
one like it in the United States or Can-
ada. When leaving your telephone
number for someone else to call you
be sure to include the Area Code, if
the caller will be calling from a differ-
ent telephone area than your own (see
call guide 10).

Numbers are most easily understood
if they are given to others as "area
code 205 (pause) 5-5-5 (pause)
3-6-2-1." When writing your telephone
number, separate it like this.- area
code (205) 555-3621.
If you're a businessman it's smart to
make it easy for your customers to
reach you. Show your telephone num-
ber on your stationery, statements
and all advertising pieces. Show your
area code too — it helps distant parties
call you faster.

tariffs

Tariffs filed with and/or approved by
the Regulatory Commissions setting
forth the rates, rules and regulations
for telephone service and facilities
are available in our business office for
public inspection.

decorator telephones

South Central furnishes all equipment
necessary to provide quality telephone
service. This includes Custom Tele-
phone Units (assemblies of electrical
and mechanical telephone working
parts) designed for use with decorator-
type telephone housings you may buy
in stores.

If the telephone housing you buy is
stamped as one meeting Bell System
Design Specifications for use with tele-
phone operating parts, we will install
an assembly of working parts for much
less than if the housing or decorator
telephone does not have the stamp,
but can be modified.
In addition, standard connection and
monthly service charges also apply.
To have your decorator telephone
modified and connected, call your
Service Representative at the Business
Office.

customer-provided
equipment

Equipment provided by a customer
may be used with the Company's
facilities if such use complies with
the Company's tariffs. These tariffs
permit installation of both voice and
data transmitting equipment. How-
ever, customer-provided equipment,
such as extension telephone sets
(other than decorator telephones
modified by the Telephone Company),
telephone answering devices and data
sets, must be used with prescribed
Telephone Company furnished pro-
tective and signaling devices for which
a charge is made, and must meet the

technical criteria described in the
Company's tariffs. Customer-provided
telephone answering devices incorp-
orating Authorized Protective Con-
necting Modules may be connected
by means of telephone jacks (or other
appropriate interface terminations)
furnished, installed and maintained by
the Telephone Company. The tariffs do
not permit wall jacks, plugs, extension
cords, etc., not provided by the Com-
pany to be connected directly to Tele-
phone Company lines.
The tariffs are designed in the interest
of good telephone service and to pre-
vent hazards to customers and Com-
pany employees. A customer's service
is subject to suspension or termination
when customer-provided equipment or
wall jacks, plugs, extension cords,
etc., are used in violation of these
tariffs. Before connecting and using
any customer-provided equipment,
call your Service Representative at the
Telephone Company Business Office
for information concerning the instal-
lation and use of such equipment and
any applicable charges.
A service charge will apply when and
if the Company makes a repair or
service call and the trouble is found
to result from the use of customer-
provided equipment.
These regulations are binding on both
the Company and the customer.

Guarding against Fraud

For your protection, new equipment
and procedures enable the Telephone
Company to detect and investigate
fraudulent calls. State law provides
that no person shall defraud or at-
tempt to defraud the Telephone Com-
pany of its lawful charges. Violators
are subject to a maximum penalty of
imprisonment for twelve (12) months
and a fine of One Thousand Dollars
($1,000.00) upon conviction of a first
offense, and for any subsequent of-
fense, confinement at hard labor in
the penitentiary for ten (10) years.

out-of-town directories

Directories for other cities may be ob-
tained by calling the business office.

automatic answering set

Certain telephones are equipped with
an automatic device, known as an au-
tomatic answering set, which answers
the telephone mechanically. It then
makes a recorded announcement. If
your call is answered by an automatic
answering set, listen carefully for the
announcement which will be self-ex-
planatory. Some sets will also record
