TELEPHONE DIRECTORY

GENERAL INFORMATION

Business Transactions With Dixie Telephone Co., inc.

Our aim is to render a satisfactory service to our customers, however, dif-
ficulties will sometimes occur despite all efforts to avoid them. How to place
long distance calls, secure numbers not listed in the directory, report a tele-
phone out of order, and make emergency calls is shown under "Service Calls."

All other matters should be taken up with the business office by telephone,
personal visit, or letter.

Business Office, Pine Hill, Alabama. Business Hours: 9 to 12 in the morn-
ing and from 1 to 4 in the afternoon.

Applications for Service Changes and Discontinuances

A telephone call to our business office will enable you, in nearly every case
to handle applications for new service, changes, additions, and discontinuances
of service promptly and satisfactorily.

Payment of Bills

Bills are rendered on the 1st of each month for local service of preceding
month. Long Distance bills from 15th to 15th of month. Bills are payable by
mail or in person at our business office.

Conversation Timing

This office is arranged to limit the length of local calls to a period of 6 to
8 minutes by a timing device which forcibly breaks the connection. A warning
tone is given approximately one minute and again 5 seconds before the con-
nection is broken. If you haven't finished your conversation you will have to
hang up and re-dial the number.

To call a person on your party line, pick up the receiver and get dial tone.
Dial the party's number as shown in directory. Replace receiver on hook and
wait approximately twenty-five seconds— pick up receiver and called party
should be on the line.

Telegrams By Telephone

You may telephone telegrams, cablegrams or radiograms to the Western
Union Telegraph Co., and have the charge appear on your telephone bill. You
may also telephone your messages from coin telephones, paying as you would
for a telephone call.

Overseas Telephone Service

Calls to practically all the world's telephones and certain ships at sea can
be made from your telephone. To place an overseas call, tell the Long Dis-
tance Operator you wish to place an overseas call and give her the name of
the country. Rates to many countries are reduced during night hours and on
Sunday.

Mobile Telephone Calls

You can make local and Long distance calls to automobiles, trucks, trains
and boats equipped for mobile telephone service. To place a mobile telephone
call, call Long Distance and tell the Operator you wish to place a mobile serv-
ice call.

GENERAL INFORMATION

(Continued)

Recording Of Telephone Conversation

Many businesses have automatic answering and recording telephone sets
to take your calls and record any messages. A "beep" tone is the signal that
the device is starting to record. When you hear the "beep", speak your mes-
sage into the telephone clearly; you will have about 30 seconds.

For Your Protection

The "beep" signal, produced automatically by the device used to connect
recording equipment to telephone lines and heard about every 15 seconds on
any telephone call, indicates that your conversation is being recorded. If you
don't want a record made, tell the party to disconnect his recorder. You will
know he has complied if the "beep" stops. Use of a recorder without this sig-
nal is unlawful.

Your 'Phone Away From Home

More and more outdoor telephone booths are being placed at convenient lo-
cations everywhere; ready for use 24 hours a day, every day in the year. There
are hundreds of other telephone booths in buildings, stores, hotels, gas stations,
airports, railroad and bus stations, etc. You are always near a public tele-
phone. Instructions as to how to use it are displayed on or near each 'phone.

Credit Card System

Makes out-of-town calling easier when you are away from your office or
home. You can charge out-of-town calls, any time, anywhere, and have the
charge appear on your business or residence telephone bill.

Telephone Directories

Call by number and help us improve the service. You can improve the
service by looking up the number in the directory before calling, and then give
the operator the NUMBER and NOT THE NAME. We ask your cooperation.

Every effort is made to make the directory as accurate as possible. The
Company, however, assumes no liability for damages arising from errors or
omissions in making up or printing of this directory. Please report any incor-
rect listings by calling the Business Office promptly.

No binder, holder, or other cover, except those furnished by the Telephone
Company, shall be used in connection with the telephone directory.

Service subject to the business rate may be determined by the location of
the telephone instrument or the primary use made of the service. The busi-
ness rate will apply when the telephone is located on the premises primarily
and essentially used for business purposes, such as offices, stores and shops,
factories and garages. The business rate may also apply to telephones located
in domestic establishments when the service is used substantially for, or ad-
vertised business purposes.

Telephone directories distributed from time to time by the Telephone
Company remain the property of the Telephone Company, shall not be muti-
lated, and shall be surrendered upon request or upon the delivery of the sub-
sequent issue.

Out-Of-Town Directories

Telephone directories of other cities in this country and certain foreign
countries can be obtained for our customers. Prices, etc., may be secured from
the Business Office.

To Place Out-of-Town Calls

There are two general classes of out-of-town calls: Station-to-Station and
Person-to-Person.

Station-to-Station (From One Telephone to Another)

A Station-to-Station call is when you ask to be connected with a certain
telephone in another town. If you ask for a particular person, or for an exten-
sion telephone reached through a private branch exchange, as in a department
store or hotel room, the call becomes a person-to-person.

Advantages of Station-to-Station Calls

A Station-to-Station call is completed more quickly and the rate is less
than for a Person-to-Person call.

The rate is reduced between the hours of 6 p. m. and 4:30 a. m. and all day
Sunday if the initial day rate exceeds 35c. The time at the starting place when
the conversation begins determines whether the day or night rate applies.

Person-to-Person Calls

(From One Person to Another)
A person-to-person call is one when you ask for a certain person or exten-
sion telephone reached through a private branch, as in a department store or
hotel room.

Advantage of Person-to-Person Call

The rate of a person-to-person call is higher than the rate for a station-to-
station call.

The rate is reduced between the hours of 6 p. m. and 4:30 a. m., and all
day Sunday, if the initial rate exceeds 50 cents. The time at the starting place
when the conversation begins determines whether the night or day rate applies.

The initial period is three minutes, after which additional time is charged
for accordingly.

Charges begin when the called person, or extension telephone reached
through a private branch is obtained, provided calling party is holding the line.

Charges may be reversed without any change of rate.

Collect Calls

If charges on the call are to be paid at the other telephone, tell the operator
when placing the call that it is a "collect call." If accepted at the other tele-
phone, charges will be billed to that telephone.

Tariffs

Tariffs which show rates, rules and regulations for telephone service are
on file with the Regulator Commission having jurisdiction over such matters,
and are available for public inspection at our business office.

LONG DISTANCE RATES ARE LOW

FOR RATES TO ANYWHERE, JUST CALL YOUR LONG

DISTANCE OPERATOR

WARNING

The law of Alabama provides that any person who fails to relinquish a telephone
party line after he has been requested to do so to permit another to place a call,
in an emergency in which property or human life are in jeopardy and the prompt
summoning of aid is essential, to a <^ire or police department or for medical aid or
ambulance service, shall be guilty of and punishable as for a misdemeanor; pro-
vided that such party line at the time of the request is not being used for any such
emergency call. Also, the law provides that any person who shall request the use
of such party line by falsely stating that the same is needed for any of said pur-
poses, knowing said statement to be false, shall be guilty of and punishable in a
like manner.
