great financial ability, kind, just, and resolute, all of these qualities
being needed to accomplish his work as collector during that trying
period with the least possible hardship to the poor; he left a bushel
of notes which he ordered burned; established a school fund. He
had a difference with his brother Matthew, who lived in the same
house, and for years they did not speak; he would put the tax bill

through the key-hole into his brother's room, the latter returning the
money in the same way.
