1777, and was in the R. L service.

In his day it was customary to cast oxen on their side when
shoeing. Helping in this work when quite young he lost an eye
by an ox throwing back his horn. He became an excellent marks-
man however, and enlisted in the Revolutionary war, July 4,
1777, and performed efficient service therein. At the close of
the war in 1783 he went to Epsom, when bridle paths and blazed

trees were the means of reaching many parts of the town. He

first settled in a clearing located about half a mile west of the

Sherburne road in the north part of the town. A few years

later, he bought and moved upon the farm on the top of Locke's

Hill, where he was joined in June 1792 by his brother David,

who settled on the next farm south, and in 1800 by his brother

Levi, who settled on the next farm north. The three brothers

at this time, owned all the beautiful round-topped hill and much

of the land in the adjoining valley. To the south of them

stretched the valleys of the Suncook and Merrimack. In 18 18 he

removed to the intervale at East Concord where he died Aug. 12,

1839.

home at East Concord Jan. i, 1892. He was born on Locke's Hill
in Epsom. In Dec. 1835 he moved upon the farm in the moun-
tain district, East Concord, and occupied the same house until his
death. He early acquired habits of industry' and frugality, a sin-
cere respect for labor and a wholesome contempt for pompous show.
Though without children of his own, his interest in, and kindness
to, children was a marked feature of his character. Many persons
of mature years even now recall his kindness towards them as
boys. The beauties of nature were a perpetual pleasure to him
and impressed him with the wisdom of the Creator. He loved all
animals, believing they, like men, were created for some good
purpose. To the very last he kept well posted on current events,
his interest in the world never flagging, although all these later
years he expressed himself as "living on borrowed time."
