SEVENTH GENERATION 153

Jan. i6, 1776, died in Brooklyn, N. Y., Aug. 6, 1857. Ephraim
was in Hollis, Me., until 1802, then lived four years in
Saco. From 1806 to 1829 he was a merchant in Boston, and
from there moved to New York City where he died Aug. 2,
1832.

He wrote the following in his Bible: "The following is known
of my ancestors, that two brothers came from England about
1625-30; one settled at Cape Ann the other at Rye, near Ports-
mouth, the latter being the grandfather of my grandfather;
my ancestors before my grandfather all lived and died in Rye.
My wife's grandfather, Joshua Foss (b. 1709), who married
Lydia Rand, has informed me that his grandfather came to
Boston as midshipman on a war ship about 1630, left the vessel
and settled in Rye, having a large family. This Joshua lived
to be 99 years old. When I was young he gave me much infor-
mation in regard to the early settlers, hardships and perils of
the Indians. He well remembered seeing the workmen in
1 7 13 cutting the canal from the sea to let the salt water into
the fresh pond in Rye (at Rye Harbor), by which a large tract
of salt marsh was made. His wife, Lydia Rand, also descended
from Rye people; her grandparents came over aged people
about 1630, and they with her father's first wife and two chil-
dren were killed by the Indians and were buried in one grave,
now known to Rye people. Signed Ephraim Locke.
