acting on his physician's advice he went to Hampton, for the
sea air, where he studied at the academy, holding meetings at
different houses. His first regular work was as assistant on
the Northfield Circuit. At the next Conference he received a
"local preacher's" license and took charge at East Kingston.
It was about this time that he married.

For many years as a member of the New Hampshire and
Vermont Conference, then one body, he labored throughout
the southern sections of these states, meeting with great success.
He gained many converts, built churches where there had been
none and in the second Adventist excitement during the early
forties, held his people true to their church w^ith a firm hand,
a level head and sympathetic heart. In the spring of 1847
upon the death of his father, he went back to Canada where he
remained for six years on the old home farm, at the same time
preaching at various vacant places.

After this he returned to Manchester, where he purchased a
farm a short distance from the city. With the exception of the
years from 1861-6, passed in Kittery, Me., Kingston, and Con-
way, the remainder of his life \vas spent there, where he died
after a hale and happy old age, July 21, 1896. He was greatly
interested in the organization of the Locke Association and was
one of its most enthusiastic supporters. A more detailed account
of his life may be found in Willey's "Book of Nutfield," Vol. I,
