of St. Johnsbury, Vt. He d. San Francisco, Jan. 25, 1903. After
receiving a common school education, he for a time worked in a
flour mill in Dayton, N. Y. He sailed for California via Cape
Horn from New York, Jan. i, 1849, and was several months
on the way — so long, in fact, that his brother David who bade
him good-bye in New York, came back to Lyman, taught school
that winter, and started for California in the spring, going by
the Panama route arriving there three days before his brother.
The surprise of Silas at being welcomed by his brother whom he
had left in New York can be imagined. He started mining with
indifferent success, and then bought a well, where California
market, the Wall street of San Francisco, now stands, and for
many years controlled the water supply of the city, a far more
profitable business than mining. By advice of General \V. T.
Sherman, then a Lieutenant stationed there, he invested his savings
in land within the city limits, and this in later years made him an
extensive dealer in real estate. An original "49er," he was one
of the oldest members of the Society of California Pioneers.
