died in Barrington, Oct. 29, 1876, married in Barrington, Dec.
26, 1842, Susan Cater of Barrington, who died in Barrington,
July 6, 1901, aged 81. He was a carpenter and selectman in
Rochester, 1854-6. Lyman Locke G. A. R. Post, Rochester,
is named for him. He enlisted in Co. G, 8th N. H. Reg., was
made 2nd Lieut, in 1861, ist Lieut, in 1863. He became Cap-
tain, was wounded the same year, and was discharged on account
of wounds 1864.

Elizabeth A. Waterhouse of Gonic, died May 1855. daughter
of Nicholas V. and Susan (Chesley-Place) ; married 2nd, Apl.
13, 1870, Angelina Hayes of Rochester, born March 26, 1839,
daughter of Watson and Joan (Winkley) . He received his early
education in this native town, supplemented by several terms at
Gilmanton Academy, the tuition for which he earned in the
Gonic mills. Continuing at work in the mill and for his father-
in-law until 1855, he moved to Sauk Rapids, Minn., remaining
there for two years. The death of his wife ended his western
plans and he soon returned to Gonic where he began the grocery
business and continued until the war broke out. When Presi-
dent Lincoln called for 75,000 men he began enlisting men for the
3rd N. H. Reg. but unable to get an expected appointment in
this Reg. he started enlisting the 4th Reg., 32 men of which
went from Rochester. Starting as private in this Reg. Sept.
16, 1861, he was promoted rapidly until made a Captain in the
Commissary Dept. in 1864, where he made good until discharged
Nov. 27, 1865, as Brevet Major U. S. Vols. He was the pioneer
brick manufacturer of Gonic, starting in 1866 and made brick
and lumber for 20 years. From 1886 to his death he was engaged
in farming in Barrington. He was a man of marked ability in
divers ways, generous and impulsive in his actions, called "a tip
top officer" and liked by the soldiers. He did much for the
future of Gonic. He was postmaster of Rochester in 1861.
In 1865 he was Post Commissary in Brownsville, Tenn., and
resigned Nov. 1865. He was presented with a sword by the
citizens of Rochester, and a G. A. R. Post has been named
after him.
