in the assault on Fort Fisher. In early life he was a farmer and
shoemaker, but the most of his life was spent in Concord, em-

a ready talker and ever prepared for an argument.

of Rye and Portland, Me. At 15 he was shoemaking, and a year
later went to Farmington as foreman of a shop. Returning to
Portsmouth, he learned the house joiners trade, became a builder
and continued as such the rest of his life except the last six years
when he was incapacitated. He enlisted Nov. 20, 1862, and was
carpenter's mate on the ship "Colorado" until his discharge Feb.
10, 1864. Lack of schooling was rapidly overcome by constant
reading and study, so that in mature years he was able to hold
his own with those of higher education, was an able talker, and
one whose advice and sound judgment was eagerly sought and
followed. He was a IVI aster Mason, served the Odd Fellows 35
years as secretary, was long a member of the Fire company and
the Mechanics Association of which he was several times Presi-

the School Board. He is a member of the various Masonic bodies
including De Witt Clinton Commandery of Knights Templar, and
several local clubs. He is now serving his third year as Warden of
St. John's Episcopal Church. It is quite possible that this geneal-
ogy would never have been completed, or at least not for many-
years, without the great assistance of Mrs. Locke. She has shared
my labors in all the large libraries, has read all the proof with me,
in every way has been my encourager and co-worker and is surely
an equal sharer in any credit which this book merits. She is an
active church worker, prominent in all women's efforts for the
betterment of the race and city, and has served in various official
capacities in the Woman's Club, Civic Club and Girls' Club of
Portsmouth.
