JOSEPH, OF MANSFIELD. GONN.

Joseph 1. Married Ann Slate; at Mansfield, Conn., Oct. 9, 1734; he
d. May 15, 1742. Issue, i. Josepii, b. July 4, 1736; ii. Ann, b. Feb.
6, 1738; iii. Elizabetli Williams, b. June 19,1741: all at Mansfield,
Conn.

[Thei*e is no documentary proof found as to the parentage of Joseph,
of Mansfield, though extensive search was made by genealogists forty
years ago, as well as by others recently. In the absence of such proof
the following facts are worthy of consideration : Daniel (3), (see page
9), had a son, Joseph, b. March 13, 1694. That Joseph resided at Kum-
ney Marsh, and m. Elizabeth Chamberlain, who d. in 1721, leaving one
son, Edmund; (see page 51.) What became of him after the death of
his wife is unknown; there is no record of him in the Rumney Marsh
records. Joseph, of Mansfield, d. May 15, 1742 ; on the 5th of Februa-
ry, about nine months subsequent to the death of Joseph, of Mansfield,
Daniel (3) executed his will, in which he mentioned the names of all his
children, except Joseph, and added a bequest of 5 pounds to his grand-
son, Edmund, who was a son of Joseph and 24 years of age at that time.
The question arises, was not that Joseph, this Joseph of Mansfield? —
Under the Massachusetts law of 1743, unlike the law of the pi-esent day,
it was not necessary for a testator to mention the names of the issue of
a deceased child ; so that the will of Daniel would not have been invali-
dated by the omission to mention the names of the children by Ann
Slate. Joseph, of Mansfield, left no will, and his estate, which was
small, was given to his widow Ann, and the estate thus '' quieted."' To
ofliset these considerations, there has been a tradition among the de-
scendants of Joseph, who m. Ann Slate, that he came to Connecticut
from Lynn, Mass., but there is no record of a Joseph Whittemore on the
Lynn records previous to 1800, nor on the church records, of the same
place, except a Joseph bapt. Nov. 22, 1722.]
