elaborate Passion Play, and then consider whether
England is so poor in talent that its amateurs must
journey to the centre of Europe to witness a Wagner
Festival.

The truth is, there is nothing wrong with England
except the wealth which attracts teachers of singing
to her shores in sufficient numbers to extinguish the
voices of all natives who have any talent as singers.
Our salvation must come from the class that is too
poor to have lessons.

By BERNARD SHAW.

Plays, Pleasant and
Unpleasant.

I. Unpleasant. II. Pleasant.

With special Introduction,
Prefaces to each Play, and
a Portrait of the Author in
Photogravure.
Fcap. 8vo. Cloth. $s. each vol.

Mr. William Archer, in The Daily
Chronicle, says of these " Plays ":—

** The character of Mrs. Warren
is superb, the indictment of the
economic conditions which beget
Mrs. Warrens and Haeir bond-
women is thrilling and crushing,
and the technique is throughout
admirable, especially in the in-
tensely dramatic manipulation of
the g^eat scenes. ... It is impos-
sible, by the means at my disposal,
to convey any idea of the dignity
and beauty, the humour and ten-
derness of * Candida.' ... I say
and reiterate that it is a work of
real genius."
