To the Printing Trade:

This is the much-wanted OLIVER PRINTYPE.

As the name indicates it is made .to match and
does exactly match one of the latest and most popular
faces used on the Oliver Typewriter.

The type is not cut for direct printing, but is
designed for printing thru silk thus giving the ribbon
effect.

To print thru ribbon is but a little more diffi-
cult than to print direct from type'* few can detect
the difference between regular typewriting arid circu-
lars printed from this type. In any case the Oliver
will make a most effective circular..

When your form is ready to lock spread a piece of
China silk over its face, tuck the edges down into the
furniture and lock them up with the' form; the silk
need not be tight; a little looseness makes the slight
blur of the original; the form is printed thru the
silk.

Use only new process ink; we can supply it; use
rollers that have never taken other ink; do not wash
them or use them for other purposes.

Try it and you will find plenty of work waiting
you.

Yours truly,

May 21, 1906

Babcock Printing Press Mfg. Co.,
New London, Conn.

Gentlemen:

That I should have purchased my fifth Optimus press from you, with
four in use, seems sufficient answer to your recent inquiry. Nevertheless,
I will enter into particulars, as it is that I infer you desire.

When, nine years ago, I bought my first Optimus, and the first
cylinder press I ever owned, I had difficulty in deciding which of the
several presented to me offered the most for my money. I did not know as
much about printing machines then as I think I do now. I could not afford
to experiment, for which I had neither time nor money, especially money. I
remember I considered carefully and conservatively every claim made by all.
Being "taken" with the delivery of the Optimus I gave the order to you. I
think that* that was the point I then considered most striking and valuable
about the press, for I was intending to do a line of very nice cut work, 'and
your manner of delivering the sheet pleased me as offering the cleanest way
of accomplishing the purpose.

Whatever doubts I may have had nine years ago about buying, do not
possess me now. Practical experience for that. length of time has convinced
me of the value and dependability of the Optimus in other things than its
delivery. In two very important points, its driving motion and its eccen-
tric cylinder lift, I believe it embraces in the simplest forms that which
is most desirable for the purposes. My first press was among the early ones
with the ball and socket motion, and though this machine, a No . 6, has been
in continuous use it has given no trouble whatever. So far as I can see
its reverse is as smooth and easy as the latest press put in; it is absolute
in register, and recently on a long run we drove it considerably beyond its
guaranteed speed for five consecutive days. It has lost none of its pro-
ductive power in any direction. We unhesitatingly giye it the run of the
forms, and have no reason to discriminate against it in any way.

At one time I did not think it possible for any machinery to grow
better as it grew older in use. I know it is not theoretically sound, and
it may not be practically; but I often think my Optimus presses are getting
better and better. My pressman seem:s of the same opinion. We cannot
account for it; yet we think we obtain daily evidence of this fact.

If I were not fully satisfied I would have bought some other ma-
chine. I have investigated others closely at times with this in view; but
have found none offering as much as I already possessed in the Optimus.
Your later presses have some minor improvements that are valuable, and are
marked advances over the first I bought; but I am pleased to see that the
main principles and features are the same in all.

I am, therefore, satisfied to buy the Optimus because I believe it
unequaled; because it has proved a profitable thing to do, and because you
have treated me to a square deal every time.

Very truly yours,

Wm . D . Dunn .

Gentlemen :-

We appreciate what you say in your letter of the 17th. and no
one appreciates more than we do loyalty and friendship. Mr. Joe
M. Chappel, met the writer in New York sometime ago and told this
little story: "I was a kid; I had aspirations to become a great
newspaper man. I had no money, but my character was good; I knew I
was honest. With blithe heart, therefore, I wended my way to your
St. Paul house, stated my case and was kindly advised by them that
if I had not any money it was not a good thing to contract a debt
and go into business, that I had better get some money first. It
