ter of Thomas and Rachel (Rich) Smith of Riverdale, Mass. He
was a mariner in Riverdale, died Dec. 22, 1888; she died Aug. 5,
1889. They celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage
Dec. 10, 1882, when six children, twenty-three grandchildren, and
three great-grandchildren were present.

ried, Nov. 26, 1846, Nancy Lane, born June 13, 1825, daughter of
James and Judith (Lane) Lane of Annisquam, Mass. He is a mar-
iner in Riverdale, Mass. Captain Ezekiel Call was lost in the severe
gale of April 2, 187 1, and Mrs. Benjamin Thurston showed her chris-
tian beneficence by collecting the means to build a house for the
widow and five small children left by this casualty.

mariner till a few years befdre his death, when he tended a lighthouse

there Aug. 24, 1806; married, 1835, Serena Merrill Gott, daugh-
tex ofCapt. Isaac and Mary [no. 1,337] (Thurston) Gott [no. 1,337] ;
she died April i, 1877. He was master of a fishing vessel for many
yesrs, in West Deer Isle, Me., and brought the first fare of mackerel
from the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He died April 20, 1886.

Mr. Taylor is a boot maker in East Weymouth, Mass. ; served in the war
against the rebellion in the 4th Mass. heavy artillery. They have :

3068 Benjamin Franklin," b. 1836; worked at painting in East Boston; went to a

com'l college ; shipped in the Great Republic, which was burned in New
York harbor. He then sailed in the Sea Flower, came back second mate;
went to England and sailed as first mate of the large and beautiful ship
Bolingbroke to India; then sailed as master of the British Lion two
voyages to India. After an absence of nine years he m. Mary Major of
East Boston, and sailed for England as master of the bark Edna, with his
wife on board, and was lost off the coast of Ireland in a terrific storm,
1870. Their bodies were found, and l:)uried in one grave on that island.

3069 Eugene," b, Jan. 13, 1842; a seaman in the merchant service till the rebellion

broke out, when he served in the mortar fleet under the command of Com.
Porter, and later on the U. S. flag ship Brooklyn at Mobile and Fort
Fisher. At the close of the rebellion returned to the merchant service.;
187 1 entered the navy again, and served till 1885, most of the time as a
petty officer in China and Japan seas; since in the employ of the L'. .S.
Net & Twine Co., at Green Point, L. I. ; a Methodist; m., July 23, 1890,
Eleanora Roff, b. in New York city, Nov. 12, i860, da. of Benjamin and
Catherine Roff.

against the rebellion in the 3d Mass. cavalry, receiving two commissions

Second, May 27, 1869, Mrs. Mary E. Sproul of Bristol. He was
a master mariner in Bristol ; died Nov. 5, 1870.

Thomas Foster Thurston ^ ( JoJui,'^ John,'^ yoseph,^ Joseph^
Daniel^'), son of John and Sarah (Foster) Thurston of South Bristol,
Me.; born there Sept. 21, 1822; married, at Monhegan Isle, Me.,
March 12, 1848, Alice Vose Albee, born in Thomaston, Me., Jan.
29, 1828, daughter of Rev. Samuel and Jane Robinson (Fales) Albee
of Rockland, Me. He became master of a vessel at the age of nine-
teen, and continued till October, 1888, never losing a vessel or even
a spar. He was a good navigator and a competent pilot, from the
gulf of Mexico to the St. Lawrence ; member of the Episcopal
church in Rockland; May, 1884, moved to Portland, Me., and 1887
to Worcester, Mass., where he died June 2, 1889. His remains rest
in the family lot in Bay Point cemetery, Rockland.

burg, Pa., and a member of the Episcopal church; in 1885 went to St.
Louis, Mo., bought a traveling photo outfit and started south, was taken
sick and brought home to Portland, Me., and in 1887 established him-
self in Worcester, Mass. ; n.m.
