in Mt. demons, Mich., but not liking it became, in 1844, a surveyor
and civil engineer, and surveyed public lands in the northern penin-
sula of Michigan for the United States. December, 1845, went to
Nashville, Tenn., and practiced the same till early in 1850, when he
went into the wholesale and retail dry goods trade in Nashville. His
wife owned forty-six slaves. He turned his attention to planting,

purchased 1,940 acres of land in Chicot Co., Arkansas, and 3,600
more in Red River Co., Texas, bought forty-one more slaves, and
placed all on the Red River plantation, still continuing his dry
goods business till March, 1861. He recruited an artillery regiment
of 1,756 men for five years, or during the war, for the rebel army,
and served as colonel of the same under Generals " Stonewall " Jack-
son, Ewell and Longstreet, all under Robert E. Lee, commander-in-
chief of the Confederate States army, participating in all the great
battles of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania, until April 9, 1865,
when Gen. Lee surrendered his army to Gen. Grant. In 1878 he
removed to Sevmorr. Ind., " broken physically and financially," and
in religion l' - -; ;ii He was a man of 5 feet, 6 inches, 125 pounds;
black hair and eyes. His wife was a blonde. Their children are
fair except Mollie, who is a brunette.
