Pelham, Mass. ; born there May 25, 1837 ; married, June 23, 1885,
Susan Amelia Hammond, born Nov. 28, 1847, daughter of Augus-
tus [born in Pittsford, Vt., June 5, 1800] and Mary (Penfield) [born
in Pittsford, June 2, 1807] Hammond, and married Oct. 10, 1839.
He was son of Thomas and Hannah (Cross) Hammond, married
1784, she was daughter of Sturgis and Laura (Giddings) Penfield,
who were married in 1806.

Mr. Thurston worked on his father's farm in Pelham and Enfield
during most of his minority, attended the Monson academy to pre-
pare himself for teaching, and taught winters from 1856 to 1865, i^
Palmer, Belchertown, Amherst grammar school and Sunderland high
school. While thus engaged in Palmer, in January, 1858. he says : —
"At midnight, without any previous serious thoughts, I was instantly
convicted of sin against God, and after a struggle of three long
hours, asked him, for Christ's sake, to pardon and use me as he
pleased. In the morning, my first conviction was, I must preach the
gospel, tho previously always opposed to it." He commenced prep-
aration, in the face of many difficulties, at Williston seminary. East
Hampton, Mass.; entered Amherst college in September, 1861, grad-
.uated 1865 ; entered Bangor theological seminay, October, 1865, and
left for Andover theological seminary, May 6, 1867, and graduated in
186S. Not wishing to settle at once, he preached in East Machias,
Me., from October, 1868, to December, 1869. Was installed in Sud-
bury, Mass., Feb. i, 1870, Rev. J. M. Manning, d.d., of Boston,
preaching the sermon ; resigned, and was dismissed in October, 1874,
and was installed over the "Village Church " in Boston, Dorchester
district, Jan. 21, 1875, having commenced preaching there Jan. i,
and continued in successful labor until dismissed January, 1880, on
account of ill health ; sailed for Europe July 14, 1 881, journeyed in
England, Scotland, Wales, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Switzerland,
Italy, France and the north of Ireland. Was absent six months, trav-
eled twelve thousand miles, and was much improved in health. Com-
menced as stated supply in Sutton, Mass., November, 1884, and

gave up the charge April, i8go, after a successful service of nearly
six years.

Epping, N. H. ; born there May 28, 1765 ; married Widow Bray.
He took the yellow fever in the West Indies and died in Savannah,
Ga., on his passage home in 1809, aged 44. His son John was with
him as cabin boy. He was a master mariner and owner of a vessel
trading with the West Indies, residing in Portland, Me. March 8,
1 78 1, at the age of sixteen, he enlisted for three years in the ist New
Hampshire regiment, under Col. Joseph Cilley, from the town of
Deerfield, N. H.

He went to Hartland, Me., in 1807, when it was a wilderness ; Meth-
odist, died Jan. 9, 1837, in Bangor, Me. ; she died July 15, 1886.

Oct, 3, 1816, daughter of Edmund and Mehitable (Drown) Shackley
of Kennebunk, Me. She died Nov. 23, 1866. Second, Mrs. Esther
Shackley (Battles), sister of his first wife. He is a cracker baker
in Cambridgeport, Mass., in firm of Thurston, Hall & Co., and has
a store in Boston ; has served in both branches of the city govern-
ment, was representative to the general court in 1874 and 1875 5 is a
member of the Universalist church.

sheet iron worker, a member of the Universalist church in Lowell,
Mass., died June 27, 1891.

Maria (Snow) Thurston of Cambridge, Mass. ; born there April 13,
1844 ; married, June i, 1874, Nellie Florence Mann, born in
Lowell, Mass., Sept. 18, 1856, daughter of Rufus and Charlotte
(Reed) [died Oct. 11, 1874] Mann of Cambridge. He was treasurer
of the Cambridge savings bank at Cambridge. He enlisted in the
52d Illinois regiment, in the war against the rebellion, in 186 1, and
continued in it until the' close of the war ; was under Grant at the
battle of Pittsburg Landing (or Shiloh), Tenn. ; with Rosecrans at
the battle of Corinth, Miss., and took part in the various engage-
ments and marches in the siege of Atlanta, Ga., under Sherman ; was
also with Sherman in his famous " march to the sea." He enlisted
as private, but served afterward as adjutant's clerk and general's pri-
vate secretary, also as secretary for the surgeon-in-chief at corps'
field hospital. At the reorganization of the regiment after the expi-
ration of the three years' term of service, he was appointed quarter-
master-sergeant, and served as such until the mustering out of the
regiment at the close of the war, died Dec. 16, 1884.

bridge, Mass. ; born there March 5, 1852 ; married, in Washington,
D. C., Feb. 20, 1878, LsADORE Maria Smith, born June 16, 1854,
daughter of Stillman Fordis [died Dec. 10, 1869] and Hannah (Tag-
gart) Smith of Royalton, Vt. He was sent to school March, 1854,
when he was two years old. He entered the grammar school in
