in Poughkeepsie, N. Y. Mrs. Thurston joined the Baptist church at
eighteen, and has been doing mission work ; is corresponding secre-
tary of the Poughkeepsie and Dutchess county W. C. T. U., organ-
izing secretary of the state W. C. T. U., and was the pioneer at state
headquarters in New York city.

9760 Mary Catherine,^ b. in South Danby, N. Y., May 26, 1854; grad. from the

high school in 1872, and taught in the city schools; converted at eleven, a
member of the Baptist church and W. C. T. U. ; m., Sept. 9, 1885, John
James Haviland, b. in Beekman, N. Y., Nov. 11, 1858, a farmer, residence
at East Park, N. Y., pres. of Chapel Corner Temperance Union 1880, Lit-
erary Union 1883-4, delegate to New York State Prohibition Convention
at Albany, Sept. 2 and 3, 1891; a birthright member of the society of
Friends. They have :

year in Sing Sing, N. Y. ; m. Harley Lord Miller, a farmer, and dealer in

brother of the preceding, and son of Samuel Montross and Cather-
ine ( Ackerman) Thurston of Pleasant Valley, N. Y. ; born there July
23, 1827 ; married, first, Sept. 20, 1854, Mary Jane Chainiplain,
born June i, 1836, daughter of Henry Champlain of Rhinebeck, N.
Y. ; she died Feb. 15, i860. Second, Feb. 19, 1862, Ann Stouten-
BURGH, born July 14, 1832, daughter of Herman Stoutenburgh of
Esopus, N. Y. He was in the freighting business in Hyde Park vil-
lage, N. Y., 1883 moved to Poughkeepsie, N. Y.

ductor in Belle Elaine, la. ; m. at Cedar Rapids, la., and have William '
and Arthur.'

tross,^ Thomas'^), brother of the preceding, and son of Samuel Mon-
tross and Catherine (Ackerman) Thurston of Pleasant Valley, N. Y. ;
born there June 17, 183 1 ; married, March 21, 1854, Clara Turner
KiLLEY, born Sept. 14, 1834, daughter of Egbert Killey. He was
first bookkeeper in the Poughkeepsie bank, then teller in the Manu-
facturers and Mechanics banl
