from which he graduated as Bachellor of Science in 1882. He
received the degree of Master of Science in 1892 and that of I\Ias-
ter of Arts in 1900. He went to New York the summer of his
graduation and became editor of the Daily Hotel Reporter. One
year later he joined the city staff of the Brooklyn Daily Times and
early in 1S84 became its dramatic editor.

In the autumn of 1884 he founded The Bacheller Newspaper
Syndicate and was its editor and manager until 1897. During
that period he had business relations with every distinguished
author in Great Britain and America. Rudyard Kipling. R. D.
Blackmore, A. Conan Doyle, Anthony Hope. Stanley Weyman,
Gilbert Parker, W. W. Jacobs, :Mary TVilkins, Elizabeth Stuart
Phelps, Sarah Ome Jewett. Robert Louis Stevenson, and Joseph
Conrad were among ilr. Bacheller 's contributors. In 1898. he
joined the editorial staff of the New York World, and on a leave of
absence for four months in 1900 wrote Eben Holden. The book
was an immediate success, its editions reaching a total of 265,000
in the year of its publication. It has since become one of the most
popular books in the language. All the great critics sounded its
praise. It is probable that at lea.st five million people have read
the book. Since its publication Mr. Bacheller has given his time
exclusively to novel writing. D'ri and I. a tale of our second war
with the British, was published in 1901; The Story of a Passion,
in 1902: Darrel of the Blessed Isles, in 1903; Vergilius, in 1904;
Silas Strong, in 1906: Eben Eolden's Last Day OrFishing, in 1907;
The Hand-Made Gentleman and the Master, in 1909. In addition
to the above he published a novelette entitled The Master of Silence.
in 1890 and has contributed many short tales and poems to the
masazines of the highest order of craftsmanship. He is a member
