Hon. Levi Parsons Morton, b. :May 26, 1824, Shoreham, Vt. Res.,
Rhine Cliff, N. Y.

Mr. Morton is the son of Rev. Daniel Oliver and Lucretia
(Parsons) Morton, and his descent is traced in a direct line to
George Morton, a Yorkshire (Eng.) merchant, who was the finan-
cial agent of the Mayflower Pilgrims in 1620, and coming to Massa-
chusetts in the ship Anne in 162.3, settled at Middleboro, Mass.

Mr. ^lorton began his business career as clerk in a country
store at Enfield, Mass., and a little later was put in charge of a
store at Hanover, N. Y. In 1849, he entered the store of James M.
Beebe & Co. of Boston, and the following year was taken into
partnership. In 1854, he and George B. Grinnell formed the Dry
Goods Commission House of Morton & Grinnell. In 1863, he
founded the banking house of L. P. Morton & Co., which soon
after became Morton, Bliss & Co. and continued till 1899. when
it was succeeded by the ^lorton Trust Co., with Mr. Morton as
Preiiident.

In 1878 and 1880, he was elected to Congress. When Garfield
became President he was offered the offices of Secretary of State,
Secretary of the Navy and minister to France. He chose the latter
office and filled it with signal ability. He drove the first rivet in
the Bartholdi Statue of Liberty and later accepted the statue in
the name of his country, July 4, 1884. In 1888, he was elected
Vice-President of the United States and filled the position with
conspicuous ability. In 1894, he was elected Governor of the
State of New York, and won much praise for his career in that
position, as he had in all previous positions.

Besides being President of the Morton Trust Co. and the
Fifth Avenue Trust Co., ^Ir. Morton is a Director of the Equitable
Life Assurance Society, the Guaranty Trust Co., the Home Insur-
ance Co. and the Washington Life Insurance Co. : President of the
