Guilford, Ct. Mrs. IMaxwell was bom in Pennsylvania, where, until
the coming of her grandfather, it had been a primeval wilderness.
A large part of her childhood days were passed out of doors in
close touch with the birds and wild animals, so that the study of
them, which in later years became almost an absorbing pas.sion,
dated from her earliest recollections.

It was not until after her marriage that the idea of making
practical use of her knowledge came to her, and she at once took
up taxidermy. She obtained specimens of nearly all the birds and
animals of the Rocky- Mountains, and was one of, if not the
pioneer, naturalists to mount them in positions true to nature,
surrounding them with their own peculiar environments.

1128 THE THOMAS SANFORD FAMILY

In 1876, Colorado, having just been admitted to the Union,
wanted one of her collections to exhibit at the Centennial to be held
in Philadelphia, Pa., and it proved to be one of the most novel and
interesting attractions of our first great international expositions.

Mrs. Maxwell made friends with the leading naturalists of the
time and considered it one of the crowning honors of her life that
she discovered a new specimen of owl named, in consideration of
the fact, "Scops Maxwelliae" by the Smithsonian Institute.
