Mr. Sanford prepared for college at Gen. Russell Military
School, New Haven, and entered Yale from there. While at col-
lege he acted as driU master for first volunteers sent from New
Haven. At the outbreak of the Civil War he left college in the
Sophomore year to enter the regular army, having been appointed
second lietenant of the First Dragoons, April 26, 1861. He was
sent immediately to Missouri, where he fought through the Wilson
Creek campaign under Gen. Nathaniel Lyon. In 1862, he was in
the army of the Potomac, and in Peninsular and Antietam cam-
paigns, the troop under his command opening the battle of Antie-
tam. Later he was attached to the staff of Gen, Merritt, in com-
mand of the First Division U, S. Cavalry, holding that position
during 1863 and early part of 1864. In the spring of 1864, he was
in the battles of Cold Harbor, the Wilderness and James River
campaign. Subsequently he was appointed on Gen. Torbet's staff,
commanding Grant's cavalry corps. At the time of Sheridan's
famous ride Col. Sanford was the first one to meet him and direct
him to the firing line. At the close of the war he rejoined his regi-
ment, then acting as escort to Gen. Phil Sheridan at New Orleans.

He went to California with his regiment and from there to Ft.
jMeDowell in Arizona, where for the next five years he was engaged
in active service against the Apaches and in explorations in the
then unknown country north of the Gila River. "When Arizona
was organized into a territory he was strongly urged to become its
Governor, but declined, preferring to remain in the army. In
1S71 he was granted a long leave of absence, which he spent in
European travel. On returning he joined his regiment in Idaho,
where he fought against the Indians and made valuable explora-
tions in Idaho, Washington. Oregon and Alaska. Later he was
engaged in the Xez Perces, Bannock and Apache campaigns and
was in the Sioux campaign in 1876, when Custer was massacred.
In 1884, he was ordered to the ililitary School of Applied Science
at Ft. Leavenworth, and to "Washington, D. C, as a member of
tlie board to devise a new system of military tactics, which system
is still in use. He was appointed Captain in 1862, brevet major in
1S64 for gallant conduct at Cedar Creek and brevet lieutenant
colonel in 1865 for gallant and meritorious conduct during the
war; was made lieutenant colonel in 1889 and colonel of Sixth
Cavalry in 1892, in which year he retired. He was president of
the Society of the Cincinnati for Connecticut, member of the Loyal
Legion. Sons of the Revolution and of the Colonial "Wars, and of
the Society of War of 1812. He was a member of the University
Club, New York . the Metropolitan Club, Washington ; the Grad-
uates' Club, New Haven, and of other American and foreign clubs.
He was a vestryman of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, Litchfield.

"Was also a member and official in several fraternal societies.

While digging in his garden he came upon the bones of a
mastodon that died several thousand years ago and which the ages
since had kindly covered with soil. The bones were close together.
A tooth with ten prongs was in perfect condition. Some of the ver-
tebne measured seventeen inches wide and ten inches thick with a
bore for the spinal cord four and one-half by three inches. Mr.
Sanford thinks that any man with such a backbone could run for
