THE THOMAS. SANFORD FAMILY

It is quite possible that there were a few other Sanford soldiers
by name or blood who served in the Revolution that have not been
"picked out" of the work, by reason of oversight or a failure to
learn of and record their war service. It is quite possible also that
there are a few mistakes' in those that are here given. There is a
record of a .Tonah Sanford who served and the descendants of tr.vo
Jonahs claim this as their own.

It is. indeed, a difficult task to learn with certaint3% who served
in the Revolution. Aside from Connecticut Men in the Revolution
the author is not cognizant of any other record or work of any note
or moment on the subject, and that work is sadly deficient. Then,
too, it gives no particulars by which to identify the Sanford who
did service except the name. The Connecticut Historical Society
has lately added two volumes to the work which proves how deficient
it was.

SANFORDS IN THE WAR OF 1812.

To learn who were Sanford soldiers in the "War of 1812 is
even more difficult to ascertain than who served in the R-evolution.
The records in the various states are deficient and those in Wash-
ington quite inaccessible. The author has learned of the following
men who ser\-ed in that war from their descendants. It is altogether
likely that there were .several others perhaps many others, who took
part in that struggle.

MILITARY RECORDS

SANFORDS IN THE CIVIL WAR.

The three foUuwintr lists of soldiers who sei-\'ed in that war
are descendants of Thomas Sanford and selected from his genealogy-.
They of course enlisted from many states. Their .service was learned
from the .soldiers thetiiselves or their deseeadants. That it does not
include all who served, the author is verj- well aware. The blame
f.)r its failure to give all rests with their descendants in their neg-
lect to inform the author. On page 1:U9 will be fonnd the Sanford
soldiers from the State of New York. Thu-^-^ wiio >.,>rved of whom

MILITARY RECOKDS
CIVIL WAR 1861-5

S.VXFORDS IN, FROM XeW YoKK StaTK.

The records in the Adjutant General's office of tln' city of
Albany, Neu- York, show that the following Sanfords by lianie
served and took part in that struggle. The author does not vouch
for its accuracy, since he found some errors in names that he
happened to know, nor as to its (■(.nipleteness. It is not only plain
but self-evident that they are not all descendants of Thomas San
ford, but the author does believe that they are practically all
descendants of Thomas. Robert of Hartford. Ct.. Andrew. Zachary
and John San ford. A few possibly may have been descendants of
Robert of Swanzea. JIass. The work is now too far progressed for
him to pick out and note tlieir .incestors. This work lie must leave
to each inquirer.

RK("ORDS AND CENSUS

VERY OLD ORIGINAL PAPERS

The author of this work in his researches secured a bundle of
very old, original papers of fxreat interest and historical value.
They pre ninety-two in iiuiiibcr. By their aid scvci-a! k:)i.tf.- :;ii'l
perplexing questions, otherwise impossible of solution, have been
solved absolutely.

They are also of great interest since they give the autograph
signatures of many men of those early days, the following is a
list of most of the papers. The names of the parties to the instru-
ment are Hrst given, followed by the date, the officer t;ikiiig the
acknowledgment and the witness. These signatures are, of course,
all original, the same as the parties to the instrument.

Nearly all the jiapers are deeds, nnd when iii;t a deed, the ni!;ri'
is given. The parties nearly all resided in Milford. Where they
resided elsewhere the residence is unven. The papei-s are givrn i;i
their order as to date.

These old papers will be filed and deposited with the Connec-
ticut Historical Society at Hartford, Ct., where they can be well
preserved, and where many people can see and get the antotrraph
signature of tb.cir cni-ly ;inr'estor
