Apppniix

The author and compiler of the Thomas Sanford genealogy-
had not sone so very far in his researching for data as to Thomas's
descendants when he often became quite a little annoyed, per
plexed and even confused by finding Sanfords of the right name,
but with wrong birth or death dates to fit into the families of
Thomas Sanford 's descendants. He had not learned and did not
know down to this time that there was any other early Pioneer
Siinford to this country than Thomas Sanford whose descendants
he was tryinij to work "out, but he soon learned that there were at
least six other Pioneer Sanfords who came to this country about
the same time as did Thomas (1632-4) and remained here, rearing
families He could have got along with all this without much
trouble but for the fact that Thomas. Robert. Andrew and Zachary
finally settled in Connecti<;ut. not far removed from each other, and
"•ave "practically half their children the same names. This fact
caused him (the author) quite a little annoyance, so much that he
found his easiest solution of the trouble was to work out and make
out the families of the other Pioneers for a few generations. In
several instances, as will be noticed, where Sanfords evinced and
took an interest in the matter, he has brought the lines (genera-
tions) down to date. (For a fuller statement of the author s
t.ronbles see article. '-Thoinas Sanford in America." page 60.)

Ha\nng got the data together as to these other Pioneer San-
fords he not only felt but believed that it would not only be a
kindly act, but a worthv and noble one as well, to preserve it. Many
Sanfords throudiout the country have no idea from which of the
Pioneer Sanfords thev descend, while others, the author has found,
are entirely wrong as to their ancestor. With the Sanford data
in this work put before them, nearly every Sanford m this country
ou^-ht with possibly a little outside study in some cases, to find
his" ancestor and fill in the intervening gaps.

The families and descendants ot Robert and Andrew San-
Ford can with much ri-ht and great propriety appear in this
volume since they are shown and found to have been brothers of
Thomas Sanford." The full and elalwrate history of the ancestry
of Thomas Sanford in Enirland given by Mr. C. A. Hoppm in the
opening of this work is. of course, of equal worth and interest to
the descendants of Robert and Andrew Sanford. The author is
also convinced that Zachary Sanford was very close in rela lonship
to Thomas Robert and Andrew Sanford, since he evidently came
to this country witli the last two. first settled with them m the
same town. Hartford. Ct.. named most of his children the same
as they and certainly came from Braintree. England, or some
nlace near it. which was only a few miles distant from the boy-
hood home of Thomas. Robert and Andrew. It should also be ever
home in mind that the English ancestry of Thomas, Robert and
Andrew Sanford was found solely and wholly by a court record

OTHER PIONEER SANFORDS

as to Zachary Sanford at Hartford, Ct. (See p. 65 for the record.)
But for this record, in all human probability, the ancestry of
Thomas, Robert and Andrew would never have been learned.
Therefore their descendant, one and all, may well be grateful to
the memory of Zachary Sanford and claim him as one of the fam-
ily, or verj' nearly so.

The foregoing gives the reasons for the insertion in this work
of the following genealogical tables and sketches of the other
Pioneer Sanfords to America from about 1632 to 1640.

KOBERT SANFORD (PION'EER)

ROBERT SANFORD (PIONEER)

The following genealogies are put up in the same form and
after the same plan as is the Erenealogy of Thomas Sanford. (See
"Key to Work," page 86) and Descendants of the Four Sons pg. S.
None of these short genealogies are indexed. Since no one of them
is lengthy the reader can readily go over them. To have several
indices in the work would surely he confusing.

1. ROBERT SANFORD {Ezrchidl. Thonms. R,rhanh

June. 1676, Hartford. Ct. : ni. 1643, Ann, d. 1682, Hartford. Ct.
He was a brother of Thomas Sanford, the Pioneer to this country.
(Savage states that this Ann was a daughter of Jeremy Adams,
which statement was no doubt based on the statement in Adam's
v/ill, c:dling Zacluii-\- Sanford hi.s griinilsnn. Recent research 1».\
A. D. Hodges. Jr.. of Boston, a most painstaking and able genealo-
gist, convinces him that Ann was not a daughter of Mr. Adams.
He find.s the Zachnry Sanford married S.mdi Willci). -rand-
daughter of Jeremy Adams, which would account for his calling
him grand.son in his will. Jeremy Adams married Silence, widow
of Sanniel Greeuhill, about 1636. There is no record or evidence
of a previous marriage. Mr. Adiuiis mentions Zaehary only in his
will, when there were in 1682 at least .seven living children of Rob
ert and Ann. (See Hartford Deeds, dist. 399. Zacharv- Sanford on
^lay 30, 1682. petitions on the part of his wife for his share of the

Hinman in his work says that Robert was in Hartford a.s earh'
as 1640. William S. Porter in his C<»in. Hist. Notices 1842. p. 40.
says that Robert was living on lots 61 and 62. Burr St. in 16.5.').
Savage has him in Hartford in 1645 and the Town Records give
the birth of his daughter Elizabeth as Feb. 19, 1645, Mr. Sanford "s
will was proven Sept. 7, 1676. Mrs. Ann Sanford 's will wn.s proven
Sept, 7, 1682, and mentions children Zaehary, Robert, Ezekiel.

He then only had two children living, viz. : Sarah and Abigail.

this family.

4. EZEKIEL- SANDFORD (same descent as 2) b. INIar. 13,
1647; d. 1716, Southampton, L. I.; m. Hannah (Mitchell). There
are no traces of him to be found in Hartford. He is not named in
his father's will of 1676, but is in his mother's of 1682. He is
named in the distribution of his father's estate in Dec, 1676 (A. D.
Hodges. Jr.). An Ezekiel appeared in Southampton, L. I., about
1670. His will is dated Dec. 9, 1715, proved Mar. 30, 1716, men-
tions wife Hannah, sons Ezekiel, Thomas and Zachary.

I am morally certain that this Ezekiel was the son of Robert
of Hartford. He left that city early, as there is no record of him
there. I know of no other Ezekiel that could be the Ezekiel of
Southampton. He was a manufacturer by trade, of cart wheels.
The people of Southampton gave him fifteen acres of land on the
north side of Bridge Lane at Mecox on condition that he remain
there and practice his trade, which he did. This was in 1678. The
first bridire across Sag Pond was built by him about 1696 and from
it that locality became known as Bridgehampton.

In the U. S. Census of 1790 there were twenty Sandford
families put down for Southampton. L. I., and all spelled the name
Sandford.

"See Early History of Southampton, L. I., by Geo. R. Howell.
