Grammar School at New Haven, the oldest Classical school in this
coiintry. In due time he entered Yale College, where he took
his first degree in 1847, receiving the rare distinction of the Berke-
ly scholarship. He then took the full course of the Tale Law Schoov
and entered the law office of Butler & Evarts in New York City
as a student, serving the requisite Clerkship and being admitted to
the Bar in 1851. Twenty-four years later he was elected to the
Bench.

His preparation for his cases was exhaustive and extended
to all the material questions involved, and his published opinions
showed how thoroughly he dealt with the subjects brought before
him. He was as pure as the spotless ermine of his rank, and never
was suspected of obliquity. In private life Judge Sanford was
beloved. His was an exemplary character of culture, and his taste
and habits were constant in virtue and Christian faith.
