Mr. Chittenden followed the business of merchant with his
brother, and afterwards alone to 1892, when he passed it to his
son Jay, who now conducts it. He was town clerk continuously
from 1859 to 1892 with the exception of the year 1869. Standing
so highly for integrity and probity, he has been guardian, trustee,
and executor in many estates. He has ever taken a great interest
in the Congregational Church and looked after its welfare with
assiduous care and attention. Res., Hopkinton, N. Y.

He had three children by first and two by second marriage.

Mr. Sanford was educated at Lenox Academy and studied
law at Great Barrington, Mass.. with Judge I. Sumner. In June,
1847, he was admitted to practice in all the courts of the Common-
wealth, and immediately entered into partnership with Mr. Sum-
ner, with whom he remained until 1849, when he went to California.
He was admitted to practice in that state by the Supreme Court
at San Francisco and located at Sacramento. In 1854, he went
to St. Paul, Minn., where he practiced his profession until his
death.

They had one child.

Mr. Sanford's boyhood was spent in Wrentham, Mass., and
his young manhood in Hallowell, 'Me., from which, in 1849, he
started for California, reaching San Francisco by way of Panama,
early in 1850. From then until 1858 he was engaged chiefly in
business with a wholesale drug firm in that city. In August, 1858,
he removed to Oakland, Cal., where, iintil the time of his death,
he carried on a retail drug business, accumulating a modest com-
petency. Mr. Sanford was an active member of the First Con-
gregational Church of Oakland, from the time of its organization,
and for many years one of its trustees and deacons. In the early
days of the city, he was for a time a member of the city govern-
ment, holding the ofiSces of city clerk and treasurer.

Worcester, Mass., and is at present Professor of Experimental and
Comparative Psychology in that institution. Author of a laboratory

: - of the board of trustees of Lyman and Industrial Schools (Massa-
chusetts State Reform School for boys and girls). Res., Worcester,
