PREFACE
This volume contains as nearly a complete list of Wisconsin
soldiers who lost their liyes in the civil war as can be made from
the records now available. In the confusion incident to contact
with the enemy, and the hurried movements from place to place,
it is frequently difficult for survivors to tell the fate of the men
who fall, and the officer simply enters on the record "missing".
As to others, some are dangerously wounded and sent to distant
hospitals, and the officers of the command to which they belong
are not at all times made acquainted with the subsequent history
of such men. Hence the extreme difficulty in arriving at correct
results in all cases.
However, a diligent endeavor has been made to incorporate
herein the name of every man listed as dead in the report of the
adjutant general for 1865, and such other names as the records
show should have been included.
The names first appear as they do in the report of the adju-
tant general for 1865, arranged according to organization. To
this has been added for convenience a list in alphabetical order.
