INTRODUCTION

^.. At the annual town meeting in Pomfret held in October,
./ 1815, a sum of money was voted for the purpose of compiling
and printing a list of those from the town who served in the
Civil War, 1861 - 1865, and the result is now before you. The
lists of the Adjutant General's office have been carefully ex-
amined, private records consulted, and reports in the Adjutant
General's office of other States, so that while claim cannot be
made that it is absolutely correct, yet it may be said to be
reasonably so. Also, the writer, either at the time of service,
or since, has had a personal acquaintance with almost all
whose names are here given.

There are some names given here, such as W. Phillips, W.
Smith, C. Burton and Albert Clapp, who were not actual
residents at the time of service, yet had only left the tovv'n a
short time previous or had all their family relations in the
town. And again, there are other names, such as Charles
Matthewson, Edward P. Matthewson, Edward H. Grosvenor,
Reuben Weeks, and others, who are credited to Hartford,
Killingly, and other towns, but who were at the time of service
actual residents and voters in this town. Not knowingly, has
any name been omitted that I thought ought to be on the list.
Very respectfully,

Pomfret, Conn., 1916.
