James Winchester (i 752-1826) entered the army as a private
and for bravery in the field rose to the rank of captain. At
the Battle of Long Island he was in Smallwood's battalion,
under Lord Sterling, and when Washington saw against what
fearful odds they were fighting, he exclaimed : "Good God.
what brave fellows I must this day lose." He was wounded,
taken prisoner and confined for over a year on the prison
ship, but when exchanged served in the south under Greene,
and was at Cowpens, Guilford, Hobkirk's Hill, Eutaw Springs,
and Yorktown. He was born in Maryland ; died in Sumner
County, Tenn.
