Nathaniel Scudder (1733-81) was in command of militia and
was killed in a skirmish with British troops at Shrewsbury,
N. J. He was born in Monmouth County, and is buried in
the old Tennent Churchyard.

William Davidson (1746-81) served as major, 1776; lieutenant
colonel, 1777, and for bravery was promoted brigadier-general.
He was killed at the battle of Cowan's Ford. A county is
named for him and Congress ordered a monument erected
to the memory of this hero, who fell "fighting gallantly for
the defense of the liberty and independence of these States."
He was born in Lancaster County, Pa.

John Deaver (1746-1827) was lieutenant, 1777, in the 3rd regi-

endeavoring to decoy Washington from his position at White
Marsh, this regiment was in the skirmish line to watch the
movements of the enemy, and the list of wounded bears wit-
ness to the bravery of the Maryland troops. He was born in
Maryland ; died in Ohio.

Joseph Cilley (1734-99) raised a company at the first alarm;

Point, and many hard-fought battles. He was president of
the New Hampshire Society of the Cincinnati, and the As-
sembly of the State presented this brave officer with a pair of
pistols. He was born and died in Nottingham.

John Toms (1714-86) was commissioned lieutenant, 1776, in
Capt. David Frazier's company, Col. Stephen Hunt's battalion,
New Jersey State troops, and was taken prisoner at the Bat-
tle of Long Island. He was born and died in New Jersey.

Michael Toms (1736-98) served, 1779. as corporal in Capt.
Asher Randolph's company, Middlesex County, New Jersey
militia. He was born and died in New Jersey.

John Ely (1737-1800) was captain of the 6th Connecticut, 1775.
He raised a regiment at his own expense, which he com-
manded, 1777, when he was taken prisoner. He was not
exchanged until 1780, and during that time acted as physician
to the smallpox sufferers on Long Island. He was born in
Lyme ; died in Saybrook, Conn.

Granddaughter of John Frelinghuysen and Elizabeth M. Van Vechten,
his wife; Joseph Sherman and Charlotte Ely, his wife.

Gr-granddaughter of Frederick Frelinghuysen and Gertrude Schenck,

Frederick Frelinghuysen (1753-1804) a graduate of Princeton,
was a member of the Provincial Congress, 1775-76, and in
1778 was elected to the Continental Congress. He resigned
because he considered the trust was too important for his
years, but was re-elected in 1782. He led a volunteer com-
pany of artillery at Trenton, and it is said it was his shot
that mortally wounded the Hessian commander. He was
made colonel of the militia of Somerset, his native county,
and was at the battle of Monmouth. His eloquent oration
on the death of Washington is still extant. He was born in
Lyme ; died in Saybrook, Conn.

John Tilton (1755-1846) served as ensign and was wounded at
the battle of Timber Creek, 1777. He was placed on the
pension roll of Gloucester County. 1818, for service in the
New Jersey regulars. He was born and died in New Jersey.
