John Polhemus (1738-1833) equipped a company at his own
expense, 1775, and served in the Canadian campaign. He
was in the battles of the Jerseys as major of the Jersey Blues;
participated in the battle of Monmouth and soon afterward
was captured by a band of Tories and confined in the Sugar
House. He was a member of the Cincinnati, 1786, and in
1818 was placed on the pension roll. His diary records that
he entered the army in affluence and left it without a pittance.
He was born in Hopewell, N. J., and was buried with military
honors in Philadelphia.

John Hart (171 1-79) was a member of the Continental Con-
gress and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He

William Gray (1750- 1804) enlisted, 1777, and served as captain
in the 4th Pennsylvania regiment, Continental Line, to the
close of the war. In 1838 his widow was allowed a pension.
He was born in Belfast, Ireland ; died in Sunbury, Pa.
