under Capt. Salmon White, 1777. He was born in Whately
and died in Charlemont, Mass.

Elisha Smith (1705-84) served as a minute man at the Lexing-
ton Alarm from Whately, Mass., where he was born and
died.

Jonathan Edson (1728- 1805) responded to the Lexington Alarm
from Whately, where he was born. He died in East Bridge-
water.

Russell Allis (1756-1835) was placed on the pension roll, 1832,
for over six months' service as private, Massachusetts Line.
He was born in East Guilford, Conn. ; died in Whately, Mass.

Born in Thompson, Conn.

Wife of William Bray Hallett.

Descendant of Lieut. Silas Goodell, of Connecticut.

Daughter of Angelo Howland and Harriet Backus Goodell, his wife.

Granddaughter of Oliver Goodell and Paulina Salisbury, his 2nd wife.

Gr-granddaughter of Silas Goodell and Sarah Marshall, his wife.

Silas Goodell (1747-1820) entered the army as sergeant, pro-
moted ensign, 1776, and rose to the rank of lieutenant, serv-
ing in Capt. Stephen Brown's company, Connecticut troops.
In 1818 he was placed on the pension roll. He was born in
Pomfret, Conn. ; died in Norwich.

MRS. CHARLOTTE WILLCOX EARNHARDT. 54979

Born in Clinton, Conn.

Wife of William Crawford Earnhardt.

Descendant of Elnathan Hurd.

Daughter of Frederick W. Willcox and Margaret Bogardus, his wife.

Thomas Pinckney (1750-1820), captain 1st South Carolina,

1775; major, 1778; aide-de-camp to Generals Lincoln and

Gates, 1779-80; was wounded and taken prisoner at Camden,

1780; exchanged same year and served to close of war. He

was born and died in Charleston, S. C.

James Winchester (1752-1826) entered the army as a private,
and for bravery rose to the rank of captain ; was in Small-
wood's battalion at the battle of Long Island. He was
wounded, taken prisoner, and confined for over a year on a
prison ship; was exchanged, and served at Cowpens, Guil-
ford, Hobkirk's Hill, Eutaw Springs, and Yorktown. He
was born in Westminster, Md. ; died in Sumner County, Tenn.

Committee of Safety, 1776. He was a member from Putney
to the convention, 1777, to decide the claim of New York
State to the Hampshire grants, and became very bitter in the
controversy. He was born in Rehoboth, Mass. ; died in
Putney, Vt.

James Martin removed to North Carolina, 1774, and was placed
on the pension roll of Stokes County, 1831, for service as
colonel, North Carolina militia. He was born, 1742, in New
Jersey.

at the battle of Ramsour's Mills. He built a fort in Georgia
for protection against the Indians, and it is still known as
Knox's fort. He was born in Rowan County, N. C. ; died in
Jackson County, Ga.

1779, in the 1st Maryland; promoted lieutenant, 1780, and,
1 78 1, was transferred to the 4th Maryland and served until
the close of the war. He was born in Maryland; died in
Kentucky.

Henry Dixon (1740-79), in 1775, entered the army as captain
of the 1st regiment. Among the shattered legions of Gates,
at Camden, when his command was driven back, he would
not retreat, but sabred his way through foes on all sides. He
served as inspector general after Greene succeeded Gates,
and was in the battles of Wetzell's Mills, Guilford, and
Eutaw. He was born and died in Caswell County, N. C.

Thomas Polk (1732-93) served in the Provincial Congress and
was commissary of provisions for the Continental troops
when the army was in great need. He was appointed
brigadier-general, 1781, to succeed William Lee Davidson,
who fell at Cowan's Ford. He died in Charlotte and is
buried in the Presbyterian churchyard.

Burgesses, 1769-76. He was born in Virginia ; died in Lunen-
burg County.

Lewis Williams (1755-1836) served as a private, Virginia
troops ; engaged in the battle of Guilford Court-House. Soon
after he enlisted he received a furlough to return home to be
married. He was born in Brunswick County, Va. ; died in
Mecklenburg County.

John Walker (1736- 1809) was appointed captain in the 1st
North Carolina regiment, 1775; promoted major, 1777, and

subsequently rose to rank of lieutenant-colonel, Continental
Army, and also aide-de-camp to General Washington. He
was born in Ireland ; died in Orange County, N. C.

Henry Black (1753-89) a patriot who furnished money for the
North Carolina militia. He was born in Virginia ; died in
Caswell County, N. C.

Robert Black (1725-81) served as a private in the North Caro-
lina militia and furnished supplies to the army. He was born
in Virginia ; died in Caswell County, N. C.

Empson Byrd (1745-1802) was a private in the Orange County,
North Carolina militia. He was born in North Carolina ;
died in Orange County.

William Whitehead (1724-1816), in 1778, took the oath of
allegiance in Orange County, and, 1779, was private in Cap-
tain Coleman's company of Orange County militia. He was
born in Granville ; died in Orange County.

MISS MARY PINKERTON. 54994

Descendant of Laban Hartley.

Daughter of James Pinkerton and Sarah Caroline Anderson, his wife.
Granddaughter of Joseph Anderson and Sarah Hartley, his wife.

Laban Hartley, (1742-1842) enlisted, 1778, as a private and

served under different commands. He was at the battle of

Brier Creek. He received a pension in Williamson County.

his tombstone gives his service.
