New Pole Barn Built At Farm

The 1979-80 academic year has been porriculorly noreoble
for the Animal Husbandry deparrmenr. Of foremost impor-
ronce is rhe new pole born or Farm 3. This born will house all
rhe carrle, provide reaching space and room for special senior
projects, Ir includes a feed-mill room and a room for hondling
and washing rhe animals. This building was mode possible
through rhe donorion of Mr. Kennerh Gemmill, o member of
rhe board of rrusrees, and his wife.

This was also the firsr year for the Equestrian ream ro hove
on official cooch, Mrs. Susan Clark, of Milesrone Form. This raises
rhe teom's stotus ro that of intercollegiate level.

The Lob Animal Club was ocrively established this yeor. It
wos on outgrowth of the interest of students porricipating in the
four-course package in lobororory onimal science offered by
the deparrmenr Complerion of rhese courses qualifies students
for positions as lob animal handlers ond prepores them for rhe
Americon Sociery of Laboratory Animal Science Technicion
Exom.

In oddition to this year's ochievemenrs, the Animal Husbond-
ry deporrment hos hopes for further oddirions, including that of
sheep facility next to the new pole born ond o facility for
horses These furure gools ore dependent on donotions by
school potrons.

Dairy Husbandry



Practicality Stressed



Though small in rhe number of upperclossmen enrolled in
rhe deporrmenr, Doiry Husbandry, nevertheless, has o srrong
curriculum which well prepares srudenrs for careers in rhe field
of dairy science. The required courses give srudenrs a solid
bockground in imporronr scienrific principles, bur emphasis is
also ploced on procricol opplicorion, on aspect that is often
negleaed in other educotionol institutions.

One of rhe outstonding educotionol aspects of the curricu-
lum is rhe Dairy Husbandry Techniques II course, in which the
srudenrs ore responsible for the total management of one of
rhe dairy borns. In this course, students also hove o project in
which they lease o cow "on paper," and ore responsible for
determining feed ration, recording milk production, ond declar-
ing profir or the end of rhe project.

To add to their educotionol experience, seniors moy elect to
carry our o speciol research project. A project corried out in the
1979-80 ocodemic year involved the induction of loctorion
through the use of hormones.

After their four years or DVC, dairy majors hove done well
or finding jobs in their field. A large number of groduores find
work on dairy forms as herdsmen, while others become in-
volved in rhe extension service and research.
