INTRODUCTION - i

The publication of a Directors'- of Coirmunity Resources in Dorchester
will be welcomed by all who are working in the interest of making
ours a better community, /md the increasing participation in this
effort is clearly evident in the m.any requests for information about
organizations and services that are currently being received.

Since its establishment in 1941, the Dorchester Inter-Agency Council
has sought to improve coirmunication among the community's service
organizations in order to more effectively meet the needs of all the
people of Dorchester. Its membership, through the closer cooperation
the Council has encouraged, has in recent years also become more aware
of the wider range of organizations in Dorchester representing a com-
mon purpose of community service. Thus, the Directory is intended to
provide a means .through which cooperation may be extended to include
all other interested organizations.

It is hoped that the Directory, as a listing of resources, will, first
of all, prove useful for the purpose of increasing our knowledge of ^
the organizations located in Dorchester and of identifying the services
that are available to its citizens. Every effort has been made to in-^^^
sure complete and accurate information. The inclusion of an organization
does not necessarily indicate an endorsement by the Council, nor does'
exclusion implj'- disapproval of any organization.

Only with the considerable assistance of the Boston Public Library,
in making available their I963 coirmunity study, was it possible to
compile the information for this Directory. To the Rehabilitation^
Service of Boston State Hospital was given the major task of printing
this first edition. The cooperation of both agencies is gratefully
acknowledged by the Publication Committee and the Council.

Your comments on the usefulness of the Directory and suggestions for
its improvement are requested and will be greatly appreciated.
